Guillermo del Toro’s film was highly anticipated in 2025. After a short run in theaters, it became available on Netflix on November 7th and stayed at the top of the streaming charts for a week before another film took over.
The new gothic drama, based on Mary Shelley’s famous 1818 novel Frankenstein, was a long-held dream for the Academy Award-winning director. Starring Oscar Isaac as Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature, the film earned excellent reviews. However, its time as the number one movie in the U.S. was short-lived. Just a week later, Liam Neeson’s action thriller The Marksman, released four years prior, took the top spot, according to FlixPatrol.
I was so excited to see that Frankenstein absolutely smashed it when it came out! Apparently, it got 29.1 million views in its first week, and then a huge 73.6 million views overall. It quickly made it into the top 10 in 93 countries, and unbelievably, it was the number one movie in 72 of them – including right here in the U.S.!
Worldwide, Frankenstein remains the most popular title on Netflix and is expected to stay at number one for another week. However, in the United States, Liam Neeson’s The Marksman jumped to the top spot on November 15th and stayed there for two days.
Liam Neeson, known for his action roles, starred in the 2021 thriller The Marksman as a rancher and ex-Marine who protects a young boy from a dangerous Mexican drug cartel. Robert Lorenz directed the film and also co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Charles and Danny Kravitz. Lorenz then collaborated with Neeson again on another project.
The movie was released to negative reviews and didn’t perform well in cinemas. Despite costing between $23 and $30 million to make, it only earned $23.8 million worldwide, according to The Numbers.
The film received mixed reactions. Critics weren’t impressed, giving it a 37% approval rating based on 110 reviews. But audiences loved it, awarding it an 83% score on the Popcornmeter.
Besides The Marksman, another Liam Neeson movie is currently very popular with streamers. While opinions were mixed, the reboot performed reasonably well in theaters and is now the most-watched film on Paramount+ in the U.S., in addition to doing well on other digital platforms.
Frankenstein Delighted the Critics & the Audience
I was really blown away by Guillermo del Toro’s new film! Even though it didn’t stay at number one in the U.S. for very long, I truly believe it has everything it needs to become a beloved classic. Everyone’s been raving about it – it got fantastic reviews right away, and right now it has an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a ‘Certified Fresh’ badge, which is amazing!
That’s a great score, especially considering it’s based on over 300 reviews! The movie Frankenstein also launched with almost perfect audience ratings, currently holding a 94% approval rating on the Popcornmeter and a “Verified Hot” designation.
The Marksman and Frankenstein are streaming on Netflix.
