Frasier is a hugely popular comedy, and one of the most beloved sitcoms ever made. It originally started as a spin-off from the show Cheers, premiering in 1993 and becoming a defining part of ’90s television. While a revival in 2023 was unfortunately cut short after two seasons, Frasier is now finding a new audience and proving its enduring appeal through streaming services.
According to FlixPatrol, the Frasier reboot is proving popular on Paramount+ in several countries, including Australia and Canada. It reached the top 4 in both Ireland and the UK. The show is also doing well on demand, climbing to No. 7 in the Apple TV store in the U.S.
Frasier Broke Records During Its Run
Often considered one of the greatest sitcoms ever made, Frasier premiered on September 16, 1993, and continued for 11 seasons with a total of 264 episodes. The show followed Frasier Crane—a character originally seen on Cheers—as he started a new life and career as a radio host.
Kelsey Grammer played the main character in Frasier. Jane Leeves played Daphne Moon, a physical therapist who cared for Frasier’s father, Martin Crane, portrayed by John Mahoney. David Hyde Pierce starred as Frasier’s snobbish younger brother, Niles Crane. Including his time on Cheers, Kelsey Grammer played Frasier Crane for 20 years, making him a long-running fixture on American prime-time television.
I was always amazed by how long Kelsey Grammer played Frasier – it’s incredible! But the show itself was a huge award winner too. Throughout its run, Frasier racked up an unbelievable 37 Primetime Emmy Awards, which actually set a new record for any scripted series back then. And it held that record for over a decade, all the way until 2016!
The Frasier Revival Struggled to Find the Same Success
While the original Frasier was a hit with critics and viewers, the 2023 revival didn’t fare as well. It premiered on Paramount+ on October 12, 2023, but many of the original actors, including David Hyde Pierce who played Frasier’s brother, didn’t return for the new series.
The dynamic between Frasier and Niles – their brotherly bond, friendship, and witty back-and-forth – was a key ingredient in the success of the show Frasier. Their on-screen chemistry was so well-received, it was even featured on another famous sitcom, The Simpsons, with David Hyde Pierce voicing the role of Bob’s brother.
David Hyde Pierce became part of The Simpsons family, voicing Cecil Terwilliger, the brother of Sideshow Bob. The dynamic between Sideshow Bob and Cecil intentionally mirrored the famously witty relationship between Frasier and Niles Crane, especially whenever Sideshow Bob is featured. Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce are well-known for portraying one of the most memorable sibling pairs in television history.
It’s understandable why the 2023 Frasier revival didn’t perform as well as hoped, and this could be a contributing factor. The show, which lasted for two seasons and 20 episodes, followed Frasier as he moved back to Boston and attempted to build a relationship with his son, Frederick.
Even though Frasier is no longer on television, it remains a beloved and highly influential sitcom. The show continues to attract new viewers and is enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to streaming, demonstrating its enduring appeal.
