For approximately two decades, there have been rumors about a sequel to the movie “Freaky Friday,” which starred Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. Now, after much anticipation, the long-awaited “Freakier Friday” is finally becoming a reality. Lohan, who was involved in the project since its conception, has expressed her readiness to laugh about the challenges this production faced. During an interview with ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con last week, she shared that while not everything she wanted made it into the final product, she feels that all the crucial aspects have been addressed. “Freakier Friday” is set to hit theaters on August 8th, and Lohan is confident that fans will be satisfied with the result.
Despite the lengthy procedure, Lohan expressed confidence that a new “Freaky Friday” sequel would be produced due to her close involvement in the process. She stated, “I played a significant role in the entire process of it being approved, so I was part of the discussions quite early on.” The actress further noted that her initial response to the approval was somewhat overzealous, but ultimately, having a solid script was crucial for success.
She said something like, ‘There’s just one thing – I want us to go on a global tour for the movie promotion,’ she chuckled as she remembered. However, that didn’t happen due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and the dynamic nature of the entertainment industry.
Lohan continued, “To be honest, we considered it, but weren’t sure if it would come to pass or if the circumstances were ideal. What mattered most was my youthful readiness to become a mother as a teenager. Moreover, having a well-prepared script was crucial.
In the new movie, the storyline continues the pattern of the original, where characters switch bodies. Originally, it was Anna (Lohan) and Tess (Curtis) who exchanged bodies just before Tess’s wedding, experiencing life from each other’s perspectives. This time, Anna is preparing for her remarriage, and her daughter Harper (Julia Butters) isn’t thrilled about the prospect of a new stepsister, Lily (Sophia Hammons). The twist this time is that Anna will once again swap bodies, but so will Harper with Tess, leading to more comedic mix-ups.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic about the upcoming release of “Freaky Friday.” While it does tap into that sense of nostalgia, I believe there’s a genuine depth and authenticity to its characters that will keep viewers hooked. Catch it in theaters starting August 8th, or if you can’t wait, stream the 2003 version on Disney+ right now!
