
Okay, so good news for Half-Life fans – there are a couple of free games on Steam that started as mods but have become full-fledged experiences. But here’s the thing: since Valve didn’t actually make these, they haven’t been fully tested to work perfectly on the Steam Deck. Steam just lists Deck compatibility as ‘unknown’ for both, so I’d keep that in mind before you download them, just in case!
Valve is offering two free Half-Life games. The first, Half-Life Legacy, is a completely updated version of the original Half-Life, with improvements and bug fixes, making it the definitive way to experience the classic. The other free game is Half-Life Arena, which isn’t a full game like Legacy. Instead, it’s a reimagining of the original game’s Deathmatch mode, expanded into its own separate experience.

Half-Life Legacy is a completely rebuilt version of the original 1998 Half-Life, aiming for a perfect recreation while being fully compatible with modern systems. It’s essentially the original game, but with numerous small improvements and refinements. Key features include new Steam Achievements, unrestricted bunnyhopping, improved weapon lighting, a scalable HD user interface, and an automatic jump function, among other enhancements.
Half-Life Multiplayer
If you enjoyed the team-based action of the original Half-Life more than the story mode, Half-Life Arena might be for you. It’s a new multiplayer game released this month by Dark Vector.
Half-Life Arena is a reimagining of the classic Deathmatch mode, focusing on fast-paced, close-quarters combat. It includes new maps, weapons, and the ability to play with bots, all while drawing inspiration from the head-to-head gameplay of the PlayStation 2 version.
