Image Comics launched the sci-fi series Free Planet earlier this year, created by Aubrey Sitterson and Jed Dougherty. The story takes place on Lutheria, a planet built on the idea of complete freedom, and follows the Freedom Guard, who are responsible for maintaining that freedom in practice. However, the series quickly explores the difficulties of truly achieving total freedom and the potential consequences for the surrounding universe. This week’s issue #6 wraps up the first major storyline, continuing to challenge expectations within the sci-fi comic genre and hinting at a potentially catastrophic event for Lutheria.
In issue #6 of *Free Planet*, the Freedom Guard faces its most dangerous challenge yet: a massive Imperial Dreadnought is heading straight for Lutheria, carrying a huge force of Screamers. If they can’t stop it, the entire freedom project could be destroyed, making the situation incredibly urgent. The Freedom Guard has a risky, last-ditch plan, but carrying it out will also create unexpected conflicts and revelations among its members.

Free Planet #6 Is a Major Shift For Both the Characters and the Story

What makes Free Planet so compelling is that it focuses just as much on its characters as it does on the revolution they’re fighting. Each member of the Freedom Guard has a unique history and beliefs, and while they’ve been working together, disagreements have been brewing. Now, those conflicts are starting to surface. Fweha bravely decides to prioritize love over some of the stricter rules of her Teomekhy faith, and publicly displays her affection, which creates a significant divide between her and her sister, Hora.
Fweha’s announcement creates tension within Freedom Guard, as a romantic relationship between team members breaks their established rules. This revelation also strains another secret relationship, hinting that the bonds holding the Guard together are weakening. Meanwhile, Hora’s attempt to seek guidance from her religious leader reveals that even bigger problems are on the horizon, and that her deepest faith may actually be part of the issue. Amidst all the action of Freedom Guard trying to protect Lutheria, these personal conflicts create a significant turning point in the story, ending on a compelling and surprisingly fulfilling cliffhanger.
Free Planet #6 Continues to Push The Limits of Comics Storytelling
Beyond the exciting plot, Free Planet #6 continues to push the limits of comic book storytelling. Like previous issues, this one offers a unique, hands-on experience. Battles unfold in a way that requires readers to physically rotate and tilt the book to fully grasp the action, and it works incredibly well. While it’s a bit unusual and can feel slightly chaotic to physically spin the comic while reading, this cleverly mirrors the confusion and disorientation felt by the Freedom Guard as they try to stop the approaching enemy. The complex plan to defeat the Imperial forces is intentionally dizzying, and Dougherty’s artwork emphasizes this by forcing readers to actively manipulate how they view the pages.
The artwork in this issue is fantastic, not just in how it uses the panel layout, but also in conveying the characters’ emotions. Facial expressions during and after the battle are incredibly powerful, often speaking volumes without any dialogue – this is especially true for the robot character, Talun. The only downside is that the full impact of the art, and the issue as a whole, is best experienced with a physical copy to fully appreciate its scope.
Wow, issue #6 of *Free Planet* is seriously good! The way it ends… talk about a cliffhanger! It really ratchets up the tension and leaves you wondering how things could possibly get worse. But what I loved even more was how much deeper I connected with the characters and the struggles they’re facing trying to build this truly free world. It’s clear this is just the beginning, and things are about to get *really* interesting. This story isn’t letting up, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
