The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of Pavel Durov: A Tale of Free Speech and Crypto
Pavel Durov, the enfant terrible of the tech world, was born on a chilly October morning in 1984, in the majestic city of St. Petersburg, Russia. His early fascination with computer science was as inevitable as a Russian winter, and he soon found himself entwined in the world of social media, much like a moth to a flame.
As he studied at the esteemed Saint Petersburg State University, Durov became enamored with the rise of Facebook and its creator, Mark Zuckerberg. This infatuation spawned the creation of VKontakte (VK), a social media platform tailored to the Russian-speaking masses, which would eventually become one of the largest social media platforms in the world.
However, the meteoric growth of VK attracted the attention of the powers that be, who demanded that Durov censor the platform and surrender user data. But this was a Faustian bargain that Durov was not willing to make, for he was a champion of free speech, online expression, and user privacy. His principled stance ultimately led to his ousting from VK in 2014.
But Durov was not one to be defeated. He was already working on his next venture, a messaging platform that would become a behemoth in the crypto world: Telegram. Launched in 2013 with his brother Nikolai, Telegram has since attracted over 950 million users worldwide, thanks to its innovative encryption technology and robust features.
The Rise of Telegram
Telegram’s symbiotic relationship with The Open Network (TON) has made it a staple for users, and its decentralized web surfing and torrent of mini-apps and games have cemented its place in the hearts of crypto enthusiasts.
As of March 16, 2025, Durov’s net worth stands at a staggering $17.1 billion, courtesy of his ownership of Telegram. And with the platform nearing profitability, an initial public offering is on the horizon.
Durov’s libertarian ethos has infused Telegram with a sense of freedom and autonomy, which has not gone unnoticed. In a January 2025 post, he wrote, “I am proud that Telegram has supported freedom of speech long before it became politically safe to do so. Our values don’t depend on US electoral cycles.”
The Arrest in France
Pavel Durov’s commitment to free speech and privacy eventually put him in the crosshairs of the French government. He was arrested on August 24, 2024, on charges of complicity with illegal activities and refusal to communicate with authorities. The arrest sparked outrage among the crypto community and free speech advocates worldwide.
But Durov’s determination to fight for his values remains unwavering. He has since left France and headed to Dubai, where Telegram is headquartered, and the global fight for freedom of speech, privacy, and autonomy continues.
As the world watches, Durov’s story serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, one person can make a difference. And who knows? Perhaps one day, Telegram will be the platform that brings about a new era of freedom and transparency.
