Greg Nicotero is widely recognized as the mastermind behind horror, having co-founded KNB EFX Group – one of Hollywood’s longest running special effects studios. With an impressive portfolio that includes shaping the iconic monsters of slasher classics like Michael Myers from Halloween, Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street, Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Ghostface from Scream, Greg is now lending his expertise to the all-new Jason Universe. This fresh take on the Friday the 13th franchise, produced by Friday the 13th LLC and Horror, Inc., will see a redesign of the hockey-masked villain, Jason Voorhees.
Nicotero shared with ComicBook that he was part of the team who decided to revamp the character. He explained that they created a fresh mask design and also an entirely new version of Jason at San Diego Comic-Con.
In May, Horror, Inc. presented the latest version of Jason Voorhees, showcasing a menacing figure armed with a machete and a hockey mask that features an intriguing 13 holes. As explained by the makeup expert from “The Walking Dead,” this design is intended to reflect a balance between the mask worn in “Friday the 13th Part 2” (1981), which was more of a makeshift sack mask, and the iconic hockey mask that Jason first wore in “Friday the 13th Part 3” (1982).
30 years later, it was a blast to revisit the Friday the 13th universe again, Nicotero mentioned. “Revisiting these,” he continued, “is always enjoyable for me. We’ve worked on Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, multiple Scream movies, Leatherface. As far as I know, we’re the only studio that has delved into all those major franchises, except for Hellraiser.
In the upcoming A24-produced Peacock series titled “Crystal Lake,” Nicotero’s revamped version of Jason will be the central figure, marking the beginning of the Jason Universe. This chilling prequel features Linda Cardellini portraying Pamela Voorhees and Callum Vinson as her son, who is set to torment Camp Crystal Lake and terrorize both campers and counselors.
In May, Rob Barsamian, president of Horror, Inc., explained that their goal is to preserve Jason’s authentic character while progressing towards the future with a distinct style. He mentioned they aim to do this by blending established and innovative voices in the franchise to achieve a harmonious balance.
Barsamian went on to say, “We provided Greg with the latest 13-hole mask and collaborated on a complete appearance that encapsulates the traditional essence of Jason. He’s a powerful, imposing, and fearsome slasher, wielding his preferred weapon, a machete.
Marc Toberoff, who manages Friday the 13th LLC, along with Victor Miller, creator of the Friday the 13th franchise, and Robert M. Barsamian and Robert P. Barsamian from Horror, Inc., have hinted at Jason Voorhees’ long-anticipated comeback to the big screen since the 2009 reboot. In a statement, Toberoff expressed his enthusiasm about reviving Jason for fans once more: “It’s incredibly exhilarating to reintroduce Jason Voorhees into the lives of enthusiasts in such an innovative and refreshing manner.” He further added, “We are delighted to be partnering with Horror, Inc. on this new chapter of the franchise and Jason’s legacy. We share their passion for this project, and together, we’re making sure that this return will meet all the expectations longtime fans have been eagerly waiting for – while also welcoming a whole new audience.
