Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Has Bad News For Fans Ahead of Season 2

The highly anticipated second season of *Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End* will premiere on January 16th, 2026, as part of the Winter 2026 anime season. Following the popularity of the first season (which was split into two parts), viewers are eager to see Frieren’s adventures with Fern and Stark continue. The first season ended with the First Class Mage Exam, but the manga story has progressed significantly since Fern achieved the rank needed to travel towards Aureole. The original manga, created by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe, launched in 2020 and was already a critical and commercial success, selling millions of copies and winning awards like the Taisho Award, even before the anime adaptation.

The manga series is facing another break due to the author’s health issues, which has happened several times before. It paused in January and returned in July to continue the Foundation Festival Arc, but just a few months later, another indefinite hiatus was announced for the same reason. The news came from @MangaMoguraRE on X, a generally trustworthy source for anime and manga updates. While there’s plenty of source material for a second season of the anime, future seasons might be delayed. The frequent breaks and unpredictable release schedule could mean fans will have to wait several years for a potential Season 3.

Which Arcs Will Be Adapted in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2?

Now that Fern has become a First Class Mage at the end of the first season, the story continues with the ‘Continued Northern Travels’ arc. With Fern’s increased power, Frieren’s group can finally journey north to reach Aureole. As they travel through the Northern Plateau, they quickly discover it’s a perilous place, filled with strong monsters and a lot of magical energy.

The first season of the anime had 28 episodes, split into two parts, and covered the first 60 chapters of the original manga. We don’t yet know how many episodes Season 2 will have, so it’s hard to say exactly which story arcs it will include. However, because the ‘Continued Northern Travels’ arc is relatively short, only 10 chapters, it’s likely that the ‘Divine Revolte’ and ‘Golden Land’ arcs will also be adapted.

Good news for fans – Season 2 is coming soon and will be available to stream on Crunchyroll! While you wait, you can rewatch Season 1, which originally aired from September 2023 to March 2024. If you’d like to read the source material, all chapters of the *Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End* manga are available for free on Viz Media’s website, and you can also purchase the volumes digitally or in print. The series is so popular, it even has some spin-off stories!
