January 2026 was a huge month for anime fans, with popular series like Jujutsu Kaisen, Hell’s Paradise, Oshi no Ko, and even a revival of Ronin Warriors. Among all the returning shows, many were especially excited for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. The first season, produced by Studio Madhouse, was very well-received, and the show’s return this month seems to be making it even more popular. Recent ratings in Japan suggest that Frieren’s comeback is one of the biggest anime successes in a long time.
According to ratings from Video Research, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End was the fifth most-watched anime in Japan for the week of January 12th to 18th. Nearly five percent of Japanese households tuned in – a significant number! While fifth place might not sound exceptional, the competition is tough. The anime ahead of Frieren – Sazae-san, Detective Conan, and Chibi Maruko-chan – are all long-running and incredibly popular shows in Japan. It’s hard to say how well Frieren performed in North America, but it has quickly gained a large and dedicated fanbase around the world.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 Explained
I’m still reeling from the amazing first season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End! Now, Frieren, Fern, and Stark are picking up the pieces after that tough First-Class Mage Exam and heading north. If you’ve read the manga, you know we’re in for a treat with this Madhouse production! They’re on their way to Aureole, this incredible place where the line between life and death gets really blurred. The second season promises to dive even deeper into this fascinating world, and honestly, I can’t wait to see our heroes battle some seriously epic monsters along the way!
The second season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End will be shorter than the first, with only ten episodes planned. However, given the anime’s huge success, it’s unlikely this season will be the end of the story. The original manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe is still being updated with new chapters, continuing Frieren’s adventures.
The popularity of Frieren isn’t just due to the beautiful animation by Studio Madhouse; it’s the show’s compelling story that really draws people in. Like the first season, the new episodes will follow Frieren as she continues to explore what it means to be mortal, all while being immortal herself. Though she often appears reserved, we’ll see more moments that reveal her emotional side and challenge her stoic nature.
