The second season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is currently being released and continues to impress viewers with consistently high-quality episodes. This season is shorter than anticipated, with only 10 episodes planned. The story follows Frieren and her companions as they travel north after Fern achieves the rank of First Class Mage. Along the way, they encounter new characters and reconnect with old friends, all while journeying across the continent. Their ultimate destination, Aureole – a place where souls find rest – remains distant, but they are determined to reach it. While the path ahead is fraught with danger, the group is well-equipped to handle whatever obstacles they face.
Fern is a fan-favorite character who began traveling with Frieren well before Stark joined them. As a human mage, she’s become incredibly skilled with magic, having known Frieren since childhood. Recently, in an interview with The TV, Kana Ichinose, Fern’s voice actress, shared details about how she developed the character in the latest season.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Star Explains How She Approached Fern’s Character

In an interview, the actors discussed the challenges they faced while filming the first season. Ichinose explained that she particularly struggled with portraying the dynamic between her character, Fern, and Stark. She said she spent a lot of time considering how much she could emphasize Fern’s cold and distant behavior – a characteristic that increased after Stark joined the cast – while staying true to both the script and the original source material.
She explained that she decided to try a new approach while being mindful of the on-set environment, and the result was a performance from Fern that surprised her. It reminded her how special it is when acting truly comes to life through the energy of being on set.
From the very beginning, Fern and Stark have had a unique connection, and they’ve continued to become closer even though they’re very different people. Their opposing personalities often lead to arguments, usually because Fern gets frustrated with Stark.
The way she acts around Stark is noticeably different than with other characters, making it tricky for the voice actress to keep her performance consistent. Despite staying faithful to the original manga, the voice actress, Ichinose, realized the character developed in a way she hadn’t initially expected after recording her lines.
Fern and Stark Have One of The Best Dynamics in The Series

Fern experienced a difficult childhood, losing her family and home in a war. An elderly man named Heiter took her in and cared for her, and she quickly had to grow up and become his caretaker as he became frail. Determined to be self-sufficient and ease Heiter’s worries as his health declined, Fern began learning magic. This pattern continued even after she started traveling with Frieren, as Fern consistently took on the responsibility of looking after both Frieren and managing all their needs on the road.
She’s usually calm and collected, but around Stark, she lets her guard down and acts more like her age. Perhaps it’s his playful personality or the fact that they’re closer in age, but she feels comfortable showing her real feelings with him. Their connection has evolved a lot since the beginning, and they’re gradually learning to understand each other better.
