The popular manga *Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End*, created by Yamada Kanehito and Tsukasa Abe, was adapted into an anime series by Madhouse, premiering in September 2023. The first season consisted of 28 episodes across two parts and concluded in March 2024, quickly becoming one of the highest-rated anime ever made. Due to the first season’s huge success, a second season has been confirmed and is set to release on January 16, 2026. The new season will follow Frieren, Fern, and Stark as they travel towards Aureole, the realm of the departed.
Looking back, I think Frieren’s greatest sorrow is that she didn’t truly *know* her companions, especially Himmel. It wasn’t until after he was gone that she realized this, and it was a regret that weighed heavily on her. Now, decades after they defeated the Demon King, she’s traveling the same routes, revisiting memories. Even though peace has settled over the land, she still encounters enemies, both familiar and new. I remember being particularly struck by Aura the Guillotine, a demon who, despite not being a central character, left a really lasting impression.
Aura’s Voice Actor Discusses Her Unexpected Fame in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Voice actress Ayana Taketatsu, who plays the ancient demon character, appeared at a special anime screening in Tokyo on October 11, 2025. She was the only cast member present at the event, held at TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku, and spoke with Mantan Web about her experience. Taketatsu admitted she was nervous to perform solo, saying, “I never imagined I’d be on stage by myself, but I’m so happy to be able to perform as Aura!”
Taketatsu is a well-known voice actress who has lent her talents to numerous anime and video games, including popular titles like *Classroom of the Elite* and *Genshin Impact*. She recently expressed her surprise and gratitude at the incredible popularity of one of her characters. She said she never anticipated such a huge response – with merchandise being created and the character becoming a fan favorite – and is overwhelmed with happiness and thankfulness.
Even though she only appeared in three episodes, Aura the Guillotine remains a standout villain. After losing to Himmel, she went into hiding and didn’t reappear until after his death. She resumed her reign of terror, but eventually clashed with Frieren again. Despite her powerful magic, which could neutralize opponents, Aura couldn’t defeat Frieren, an elf who had trained for over a millennium. Her defeat is a particularly striking scene, where Frieren calmly commanded Aura to end her own life – a command Aura, due to a reversal of her own magic, was forced to obey.
