Season 2 of Frieren is currently airing, and the latest episode continues to expand on the series’ rich backstory as Frieren and her companions travel north. We’re learning more about the world and its history, including the reveal of a previously unknown, but important, hero. The world of Frieren has a long history filled with powerful beings – demons existed long before Himmel and his party defeated the Demon King. It turns out Himmel wasn’t the only great hero, and this episode highlights that fact. While the season hasn’t started a major story arc yet, each episode has been delving into smaller stories that add depth and detail to the world.
Episode 2 of Frieren Season 2, “The Hero of the South,” is presented in two parts, telling two separate stories. The episode begins by introducing a powerful hero, rumored to be the strongest human, who is revealed to be someone other than Himmel – a figure known as the Hero of the South. While Frieren and her companions are tasked with cleaning the hero’s statue, it’s discovered that the villagers were actually talking about the Hero of the South, not Himmel. Frieren then explains details that show just how powerful this hero truly is.
Frieren Season 2 Unveils Humanity’s Strongest Hero

Stark is taken aback to learn that heroes besides Himmel are also celebrated, prompting Frieren to share the story of the Hero of the South. He wasn’t just a hero, but was considered the strongest human who ever lived. Before he died, he single-handedly fought the Seven Sages of Destruction and Schlacht the Omniscient, a powerful advisor to the Demon King. He managed to defeat three of the Sages and even kill Schlacht before falling in battle. This cemented his reputation as incredibly strong, but Frieren explains the source of his power through a memory of their encounter.
The flashback shows the Hero of the South had the power to see the future, making him the most powerful hero of his era. He told Frieren that she would eventually meet Himmel, who would persuade her to join his quest. He also knew he would die fighting Schlacht and the Seven Sages, but accepted his fate, believing his death would ultimately help Himmel’s group defeat the Demon King.
This discovery highlights that Himmel’s success wasn’t just due to his own hard work and that of his party, but built on the sacrifices of those who came before him. It confirms that Frieren is a series rich with hidden depths that add meaning to the story in a subtle but powerful way. The show illustrates that adventures are ongoing, and every hero stands on the shoulders of those who paved the way. These thoughtful details are what make Frieren a truly outstanding anime, and with Season 2 underway, we can expect even more compelling characters and moments that are as impactful as, or even more so than, the main heroes.
