From Bitcoin summer to 2025 predictions: Inside Cointelegraph’s crypto roundtable

As a researcher who has been closely following the crypto market since its early days, I must admit that 2024 was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The approval of the spot Bitcoin ETFs in January set the stage for an exciting year, culminating in the historic price hike to over $100,000.

Reflecting on this past year, it’s fascinating to see how far we’ve come since memecoins dominated the headlines just a few years ago. Bitcoin, the original cryptocurrency, has once again taken center stage and I couldn’t be happier to witness its resurgence. It’s like watching a long-awaited sports team finally win their championship after years of hard work and dedication.

Looking ahead to 2025, I am optimistic about the future of the crypto industry. With growing recognition, advancements in artificial intelligence agents, and perhaps even a non-fungible token comeback on the horizon, it seems that the best is yet to come.

On a lighter note, as we embark on this new journey, I can’t help but wonder if 2025 will be the year when Satoshi Nakamoto finally reveals his (or her) identity, and we all find out that he was actually a hamster all along! After all, stranger things have happened in the world of cryptocurrency.

2024 saw Bitcoin, the leading cryptocurrency, reach an unprecedented peak near the end of the year, surpassing $100,000 in a significant price surge. However, this milestone marked just one event in the year’s broader crypto market scenario.

For the past year, the realm of cryptocurrency and decentralization has been a rollercoaster ride: We’ve witnessed Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded fund (ETF) approvals paving the way for numerous other crypto ETFs, legal actions such as arrests and accusations, regulatory decisions, halving events, elections, and yes, even cryptic hamster appearances!

In this most recent installment of “Decentralize with CryptoMoon,“, our editorial team takes a retrospective look at the events discussed, and it’s those who are actively involved in reporting these stories that provide the best perspective for analysis.

Savannah Fortis, an EU reporter and podcast leader, was accompanied by Gareth Jenkinson, managing editor at CryptoMoon and head of multimedia; Zoltan Vardai, a breaking news reporter in the EU news department; and Turner Wright, a senior policy reporter for the US news team, to reflect on the previous year and discuss predictions for 2025.

ETFs, 100,000, regulations — oh my!

Without a doubt, 2024 started off with a landmark approval of the spot Bitcoin ETFs on Jan. 10.

The team collectively agreed that this occasion paved the way for most of what happened next, such as the significant increase in the value of Bitcoin (historical Bitcoin price spike).

Jenkinson mentioned that memecoins sparked quite a stir across the sector, whether positively or negatively. However, in his viewpoint, Bitcoin was undeniably the standout performer of the year.

“For me, 2024 was like, you know, Bitcoin summer, like DeFi summer many, many years ago already. It was Bitcoin summer, you know, finally, everyone was talking about Bitcoin again. We got $100,000, the amount of people that are investing in it, the moves that Michael Saylor has made — it’s nice to see that come to fruition after all these years. And a lot of people’s convictions about Bitcoin being paid off in such a way. It’s really cool.”

Vardai shared a similar viewpoint, expressing surprise as he’s been involved in this field since 2017, finding it hard to believe that headlines now report about whales purchasing hundreds of millions or even fifty million dollars.

“We’ve gone to the point where it doesn’t even really move the market. It’s just gotten to be day-to-day business.”

Looking ahead to 2025

The team also set their sights on the New Year and what’s in store for the industry in 2025.

As a seasoned investor with years of experience under my belt, I am excited about the upcoming year and the opportunities it brings. My expectations are high, fueled by my past experiences in this dynamic market. I believe we will see more widespread recognition for various emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence agents. Furthermore, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) could make a comeback, which I find particularly intriguing given their potential to reshape the digital asset landscape. I am eagerly awaiting the developments in these areas and looking forward to leveraging my expertise to seize the opportunities that lie ahead.
