From the archive: When Pauline Collins played Queen Victoria in Doctor Who

This article originally appeared in TopMob magazine in April 2006. It was published to coincide with Pauline Collins’s guest role as Queen Victoria in Doctor Who.

Pauline Collins, who plays Queen Victoria in this week’s Doctor Who, enjoyed portraying a funny and relatable side to the monarch. She believes these qualities likely existed in the real Queen Victoria, but aren’t typically shown in other depictions.

The time travelers land in the Scottish Highlands in 1879, where they cross paths with Queen Victoria as she travels to Balmoral Castle. They also encounter the werewolf that was featured earlier in the story. Actor Collins shares, “I was honestly frightened while watching the episode!”

This isn’t the actress’s first time on Doctor Who. She actually appeared in the original series nearly 40 years ago, alongside Patrick Troughton. Following her role as Samantha Briggs in a six-part story called ‘The Faceless Ones,’ she was offered a permanent position on the show. She recalls being offered a 39-episode contract as Patrick’s companion in 1967, but she declined. At the time, she worried about being committed to a series for so long and felt more comfortable with the uncertainty of her career. She says she still feels that way today.

Even though she doesn’t wish she’d made a different choice, returning to the show was a wonderful experience. She praised Russell T Davies, calling him a fantastic writer who created a widely popular series destined to become a classic. She believes his accomplishment is remarkable.

One of the biggest challenges for actress Jenna Collins while playing Queen Victoria was the elaborate costume. She describes it as beautiful but incredibly heavy, explaining that the many layers of skirts made it difficult to move. She joked that it felt like she was carrying several children around with her at all times.

Rose’s outfits, particularly her T-shirts, deserve attention. Costume designer Louise Page added a subtle detail – a small design referencing a specific episode – that most viewers probably won’t notice.

Pauline Collins believes David Tennant is the best Doctor Who. She explains that his portrayal has a more complex and unpredictable nature, hinting at a willingness to explore darker themes. While playing Queen Victoria, she found this unsettling, distrusting his mysterious origins and unknown intentions. However, personally, she considers Tennant the strongest Doctor to date.
