Frostpunk is Coming to Nintendo Switch

11 bit studios is bringing its popular city-building game, Frostpunk, to the Nintendo Switch. The announcement came during a recent video where the developers discussed the future of the Frostpunk series, though a specific release date for the Switch version hasn’t been revealed yet.

The video features lead designer Jakub Stokalski discussing how the game challenges players with tough decisions as they try to keep their cities alive. Now that the game is available on Switch, the developers are excited to bring this intense city-building experience to a handheld platform.

Jakub Stokalski, lead designer of the original Frostpunk and co-director of the sequel, says he loves the game because it forces you to live with the difficult choices you make and the resulting guilt. Now, Frostpunk is coming to Nintendo Switch, meaning you’ll be able to experience that challenging gameplay and moral weight on the go. Stokalski calls bringing the game to a wider audience a dream come true, and the perfect ending to the game’s development journey.

During the same video, 11 bit studios also shared updates on their other projects, including Frostpunk 1886 and a new expansion for Frostpunk 2 called Breach of Trust.

Originally launched on PC in 2018, Frostpunk later became available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019, and more recently on iOS and Android in 2024. This city-building game offers a unique twist on the survival genre, challenging players to create a livable city in a brutally cold environment. Players must carefully plan their city’s layout while battling extreme temperatures, and often need to enact laws or make difficult choices to ensure their citizens—and the city itself—survive.

The original game is being reimagined with updated technology in Frostpunk 1886. However, the developers promise it won’t just be a simple graphical update; they’re planning to add a significant amount of new content. One key improvement will be the use of motion capture technology, which will create more realistic and varied animations for the citizens, making the game world feel more dynamic and alive. The game’s lighting will also be substantially enhanced.

While we wait for Frostpunk 1886 to come out in 2027, you can play Frostpunk 2. It first launched on PC in 2024 and later became available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2025. Frostpunk 2 features a significantly different gameplay style, offering a broader view of the city. Instead of building structures one by one, players now focus on creating districts that automatically fill with buildings. You can find a detailed review of the game for more information.
