Fugitive Arrested After Returning to Italy to Watch Olympics 2026

The Slovakian hockey team had one less fan in the bleachers at the 2026 Olympics.

Milan police arrested a citizen of Slovakia on February 11th, following a 16-year-old arrest warrant issued for multiple thefts, according to local officials who spoke with Reuters.

A 44-year-old man, whose identity hasn’t been released, traveled back to Italy hoping to see Slovakia play Finland. However, instead of attending the game at the Santagiulia Arena, he was arrested in Milan after police located him at a guest house.

According to reports, the man has been sent to San Vittore prison to begin serving a sentence of 11 months and one week for thefts committed in 2010.

It’s a tough Olympics for one athlete, unfortunately, but the Slovakian team is staying focused on their performance. After a fantastic win against Finland, our forward Juraj Slafkovsky really highlighted how much of a game-changer our goalie, Samuel Hlavaj, was. He was absolutely key to the victory, and we’re all incredibly proud of him and the whole team’s effort!

Juraj of the Montreal Canadiens said he was pleased with how his team started the tournament and felt they played well. He also highlighted a strong performance by their goalie, calling the win a significant one.

I lost track of the puck several times, thinking it had gone in, but he always managed to stop it,” he said about Samuel, who made 39 saves during the game. “That really boosts our confidence. Knowing someone has your back and can cover for your mistakes is a great feeling.

For the first time since the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, NHL players are playing for Slovakia. Thanks to their recent victories, the Slovakian team has a strong chance of winning the gold medal in Italy.

Captain Tomáš Tatar explained that when the team fully commits to the pre-game system they’ve established, they’re capable of defeating any opponent in the tournament.

After Slovakia bested Team Italy 3-2 on Feb. 13, they are scheduled to face Sweden on Feb. 14.
