Before Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates sailed onto Netflix, the story of the Elric brothers was brought to life in a live-action movie. In 2017, Fullmetal Alchemist debuted as a feature film, telling the tale of Edward and Alphonse. The film spawned two sequels, continuing their difficult journey. And with the recent new live-action adaptation, the series’ creator, Hiromu Arakawa, is back in the spotlight.
The highly anticipated live-action Fullmetal Alchemist stage play, Fullmetal Alchemist: Ambitions of Darkness and Light, will premiere in Japan next month. Creator Hiromu Arakawa recently shared her excitement, expressing gratitude to fans, the cast, and the crew for making a third stage production possible. She loves how the stage format—different from both the anime and live-action series—brings new creative opportunities, even inspiring ideas for her manga! While the entire play promises to be engaging, Arakawa is particularly eager to see how the character Envy will be portrayed on stage.
Hiromu Arakawa Will Return

The Fullmetal Alchemist manga finished in 2010, and although the anime was remade as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, a direct sequel series hasn’t been made. Because the original story by Hiromu Arakawa had a satisfying conclusion, most fans haven’t been pushing for more. However, fans of this world can now look forward to a new animated project that serves as a continuation of the original series.
Though it tells a different story than Fullmetal Alchemist, Daemons of the Shadow Realm has a similar art style, instantly recognizable as the work of Hiromu Arakawa. Like the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime, it’s being animated by Studio BONES, the team behind the popular series My Hero Academia. While Daemons will feature supernatural themes, alchemy won’t be a central focus. The anime arrives on Crunchyroll this April.
It’s common in Japan to see popular anime series adapted into live-action stage plays, like those based on Naruto, My Hero Academia, and Beastars. While most of these shows stay in Japan, some have come to North America. Recently, Western audiences have enjoyed stage adaptations of Sailor Moon, Death Note, and Attack on Titan, so fans are hoping Fullmetal Alchemist (with the Elric brothers) might be next.
