Live-action adaptations aren’t new to the anime world. Popular series like *Dragon Ball*, *Yu Yu Hakusho*, *Alita: Battle Angel*, and *Death Note* have all been adapted for live-action, and the Straw Hat Pirates from *One Piece* are just one example. *Fullmetal Alchemist* is widely considered a classic anime, so it’s no surprise it received a live-action movie trilogy. Now, a new live-action adaptation is being released.
Full Metal Alchemist The Stage is a popular live-action stage play series in Japan based on Hiromu Arakawa’s well-known story. Over the past few years, two series of performances have brought the adventures of Edward and Alphonse to life on stage, featuring many characters from the anime. Recently, the production announced the actors who will play Edward Elric in performances next year, running from February 7th to 15th. Yohei Isshiki and Ryota Hirono will share the role of the main character. While it’s currently unknown if this stage play will be released internationally, previous performances of Full Metal Alchemist The Stage were made available on YouTube. You can find pictures of the new actors portraying Edward Elric below.
The Elrics Return
The official website for *Fullmetal Alchemist The Stage* has announced a third performance, scheduled for February 2026. Sachiko Ishimaru, who wrote and directed the play, is bringing together a talented team of creators and actors from various entertainment fields. Yohei Isshiki and Ryodai Hirono will both star as Edward Elric, sharing the role. Fans can look forward to the next chapter in the Elric brothers’ story, as their plans to impact all of Amestris are unveiled.
The stage play began by outlining the history of its adaptations, detailing the first two versions that launched this new interpretation of the Elric brothers’ story. Based on the popular comic series – which has sold over 80 million copies globally and inspired anime, movies, video games, and live-action films – the stage play “Fullmetal Alchemist” debuted in March 2023. A follow-up production, “Fullmetal Alchemist: Each Battlefield,” was performed in June 2024 and quickly gained significant attention.
Although a direct continuation of Edward and Alphonse’s story is unlikely, Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of *Fullmetal Alchemist*, is preparing a new anime that’s sure to excite fans. While *Daemons of The Shadow Realm* doesn’t revisit the world of alchemy, it definitely showcases Arakawa’s signature artistic style. The animation is being handled by Studio BONES, known for its work on *Fullmetal Alchemist* and *My Hero Academia*, and the series is scheduled to premiere in April 2026.
