Fullmetal Alchemist’s Spiritual Successor Hints at Big Reveal

Many consider Fullmetal Alchemist to be one of the best anime ever made, and its story of Edward and Alphonse Elric left a lasting impression on fans—though a continuation seems improbable. Fortunately, the series’ creator, Hiromu Arakawa, returned with a new manga in 2021 called Daemons of the Shadow Realm. This supernatural story is quite different from the Elric brothers’ adventures. An anime adaptation of Daemons of the Shadow Realm, focusing on characters Yuru and Asa, is coming out later this year and is building anticipation with a significant reveal.

I’m really excited for February 2nd! That’s when the new manga, essentially a continuation of the Elric brothers’ story, is going to share some updates – though we don’t know what those will be just yet. And the anime adaptation is scheduled to come out in April, which is great because the manga is still being published with new chapters. A lot of fans are hoping this news will confirm a second season is in the works, though usually, announcements like that happen after the first season has finished airing. Right now, the manga has eleven volumes out, and it seems likely the first season of the anime won’t be able to cover all of that content.

Fullmetal Alchemist x Daemons of The Shadow Realm

Fans of My Hero Academia have another exciting series to look forward to! The studio behind Deku’s adventures, Studio BONES, will also be animating Daemons of the Shadow Realm, a new series by the same creator as My Hero Academia, Hiromu Arakawa. Even though Studio BONES is still working on the My Hero Academia spin-off, Vigilantes, they have capacity to bring Daemons of the Shadow Realm to life this spring.

I recently started watching this series, and it’s really captivating. It centers around twin brothers, Asa and Yuru, who were separated as children. Years later, they begin searching for each other, and discover that reuniting might be the key to saving the world from an impending danger. While it doesn’t heavily feature alchemy, it’s full of the exciting action the creator, Arakawa, is known for, and the characters are incredibly well-developed. It’s a great blend of adventure and emotional depth.

Even without an anime series, Daemons of the Shadow Realm has already become very popular as a manga. Last year, it was announced that 4.5 million copies were in circulation, which is remarkable considering it hasn’t had an anime adaptation to increase its reach. With the upcoming anime production by Studio BONES this April, it’s likely the manga’s popularity will grow even more – a trend we’ve seen with many other anime series recently.
