Fantasy adventure games have been popular since the beginning of gaming, but traditionally, they’ve focused on combat – players usually have to fight enemies directly to become the hero. Beastro offers a fresh take, presenting a fantasy world where heroism doesn’t always involve swords and battles – sometimes, it involves cooking!
Beastro takes place in the charming village of Palo Pori, where you play as Panko, a promising young chef. Panko runs a restaurant and learns from his mentor, but life in Palo Pori isn’t always peaceful. A mysterious darkness threatens the village, and when Panko’s teacher disappears, he must step up to cook for the town and its protectors, the Caretakers. These adventurers defend Palo Pori from the monsters that lie beyond the protective walls, ensuring the town’s safety.
At Palo Pori, the freshest ingredients are most important. Players will explore as Panko, gathering herbs and seeds to grow delicious fruits and vegetables – the base for all his recipes. By farming, foraging, and caring for animals, players provide Panko with ingredients, allowing him to create a personalized menu for his restaurant that changes based on their progress and decisions.

In Beastro, you run Panko’s restaurant and customize it to please the people of Palo Pori. You’ll unlock new dishes by gathering ingredients, improve your skills, and redesign the restaurant to attract more customers. However, Beastro is more than just a relaxing farming and cooking game – it also features exciting card battles!
As a researcher studying the town’s defenses, I’ve discovered a fascinating connection between the chef Panko and our protectors, the Caretakers. While Panko doesn’t wield a weapon, his cooking is absolutely vital! The dishes players create using his ingredients aren’t just eaten – they actually power up the Caretakers. Each ingredient effectively becomes a card in their deck, influencing how they fight. What’s really interesting is that each Caretaker has unique tastes, tied to different flavor regions. Some prefer meals that are bitter or salty, while others crave sweetness. This adds a layer of complexity to managing Panko’s restaurant and ensuring we’re prepared for any threat.

I love how after the Caretakers eat, they head out to fight monsters! When they get back, they tell everyone about their adventures, and it’s presented like a puppet show. The really cool part is *I* get to influence how those battles went down by playing cards in a turn-based combat system. It’s like I’m directing the story of their fights!
Players defeat monsters by using ingredient cards – either by matching the monster’s magical flavor or completely canceling it out with a special balancing card. They can also use enhancement cards to make the Caretaker’s attacks even stronger. By building a deck of cards, players give their Caretakers abilities that can change the course of a battle, like destroying enemy cards or putting them to sleep.
Timberline Games, the developer and publisher of Beastro, took inspiration from classic trick-taking card games when designing a specific part of their second game. Previously, in 2021, the Los Angeles-based studio released their debut title, The Red Lantern, a story-driven game where players take on the role of a dog sled racer struggling to survive in the Alaskan wilderness with their team of five dogs.

Beastro represents a new direction for Timberline Games, marking their first independently published title. Unlike their previous game, The Red Lantern, which isn’t available on Xbox, Beastro is planned for release on Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2026. This unique game blends town management, fantasy adventures, and card battling, and it’s an Xbox Play Anywhere title – meaning you buy it once and can play it on your Xbox console, Windows PC, and even handheld devices. Players can also expect to access Beastro on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass from day one.
