The popular Netflix kids’ series, Gabby’s Dollhouse, is now a movie! Laila Lockharet Kraner reprises her role as Gabby in this new adventure. For those unfamiliar with the show, Gabby’s grandmother, Gig (played by Gloria Estefan), built her a magical dollhouse. Inside, adorable miniature cats come to life, and Gabby has the ability to shrink down and play with them. As Gabby excitedly declares, ‘It’s time to get tiny!’ – a phrase one editor’s wife apparently uses after every Christmas.
Gabby and her Grandma embark on a road trip to Cat Francisco, a playfully named city famous for its Golden Gate Bridge – which features two enormous pink cat heads! When they arrive, Gabby’s dollhouse and its cat residents tumble down the city’s hills and into the clutches of Vera (Kristen Wiig), a rich but eccentric cat lover who runs a kitty litter company. Now, it’s up to Gabby to find her dollhouse and feline friends and bring them safely home.
Similar to Toy Story 2, the film emphasizes that toys simply want to be loved and played with, not treated as collectibles. It’s a harmless and enjoyable story that its target audience will adore. Gabby, the character, frequently breaks the fourth wall, encouraging audience participation – like singing along or even holding hands with those nearby, which could lead to awkward situations! Kristen Wiig is, as usual, fantastic and fully embraces her role. With its bright, colorful animation and sweet storyline, this movie is definitely geared towards very young children.
