The popular series Game of Thrones launched the careers of many talented actors, and they’ve continued to find success since the show ended. Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow, recently starred in a monster movie that didn’t do well in theaters or with critics, but it’s now available to stream and is actually quite good – better than people initially thought. It’s been three years since he finished his time in Westeros.
The Beast Within is a 2024 mystery horror-thriller directed by Alexander J. Farrell. It’s important to note this isn’t the same film as the 1982 werewolf movie with the same title. Released on Prime Video November 1st, the movie follows 10-year-old Willow, who lives with her parents in a remote, heavily secured location. After secretly following her parents into an ancient forest one night and seeing her father, played by Noah Harington, change in a frightening way, Willow starts to discover a long-standing, family curse.
The Beast Within Is a Different Kind of Werewolf Movie
While many films feature werewolves, The Beast Within is a truly unique take on the classic story. It uses the werewolf transformation not just as a monster plot, but as a way to explore difficult themes like inherited trauma and abuse within families, all seen from a child’s perspective. The result is a psychological drama that focuses more on the emotional consequences of these experiences than on typical monster movie thrills.
It’s debatable whether blending a serious family story with a classic monster movie format was successful in The Beast Within. The film received mixed reactions, earning scores of 40% and 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. Many viewers who expected a typical action-packed monster movie were let down, and critics generally agreed that the story needed more development and the film felt unevenly paced.
Despite its flaws, the movie is still worth seeing, and you might even enjoy it more on a second watch if you know what to expect. The Beast Within isn’t just a typical monster movie; it focuses more on emotional impact and excels at building atmosphere and suspense. The isolated location and eerie sound design create a truly unsettling and isolating experience. The film also boasts strong performances, especially from Springall, and features impressive, realistic practical effects.
Other Horror Movies Now on Prime Video
Prime Video has a wide selection of horror movies, and it recently added even more in October. Along with titles like The Beast Within (and its 1982 film adaptation), viewers can now stream Bodies Bodies Bodies, the original Candyman from 1992, Tremors, Jordan Peele’s Us, and Companion. The platform also expanded its collection of classic monster movies, including Frankenstein and Dracula.
