Many fans consider A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to be the strongest Game of Thrones story so far, but for years they’ve really wanted to see the story of Robert’s Rebellion and the downfall of the Mad King. It appears that wish will finally come true in 2026.
A new Game of Thrones prequel is officially happening! Called Game of Thrones: The Mad King, it’s a stage play and will be part of the upcoming season at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
The new play takes place before the events of the HBO series and tells the story of Robert’s Rebellion – the war that overthrew Aerys II Targaryen and put Robert Baratheon in power. This rebellion is a significant part of the history detailed in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
Game of Thrones: The Mad King Brings Robert’s Rebellion to Life on Stage
Iconic Characters, Deadly Secrets, and the Blood-Thirsty Mad King Take Center Stage
Duncan Macmillan will write and Dominic Cooke will direct Game of Thrones: The Mad King, a stage play set about ten years before the events of Game of Thrones season one. Here’s the official description from The Royal Shakespeare Theatre:
Harrenhal emerges from a long winter, with the promise of spring. A grand feast is held before a jousting tournament, where romance blossoms and people guess who will compete. However, beneath the festivities, a secret plot against the cruel and increasingly unstable king is taking shape. Meanwhile, the sounds of war echo in the distance. This dangerous struggle for power will strain family loyalties, test ancient prophecies, and challenge the rightful heir. The question remains: who will live, and who will claim victory?
The upcoming season will feature the return of beloved characters like Robert Baratheon, Ned Stark, and Jaime Lannister. We’ll also see more of Daenerys Targaryen’s father, the Mad King, who will play a significant role. This is exciting news for fans of Game of Thrones, as it will finally reveal a long-awaited part of the story.
The Biggest Missing Chapter in Game of Thrones Comes to Life on Stage in 2026
We Love A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, But We’ve Been Waiting Years for Robert’s Rebellion
The world of Game of Thrones is incredibly rich and detailed, thanks to George R.R. Martin’s masterful storytelling and the sense of deep history he’s created. While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been a fantastic addition to the series, fans have long been eager to see the story of Robert’s Rebellion brought to life.
While many fans would probably enjoy seeing Robert’s Rebellion as a TV series, similar to the successful Game of Thrones format with multiple seasons, a stage play could offer a unique and original experience. If the play is well-received, it might even encourage HBO to consider a TV show or movie adaptation in the future.
There’s no doubt that fans are eagerly awaiting a dramatization of Robert’s Rebellion – even more so than the release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s a major story that’s been missing from the Game of Thrones universe, and thankfully, viewers won’t have to wait much longer, as the play is scheduled to debut in summer 2026.
The Royal Shakespeare Theatre will stage a production of Game of Thrones: The Mad King in the summer of 2026. More information will be announced soon!
