Game of Thrones Introduces Its New Jon Snow Replacement (& Proves the Sequel Was Never Necessary)

Seven years after the events of Game of Thrones, a new lead character is emerging to take the place of Kit Harington’s Jon Snow. By the show’s end, Jon Snow had become the central hero, defeating the White Walkers and ultimately making the difficult decision to kill Daenerys Targaryen. While there was talk of a sequel series focusing on Jon Snow for a couple of years – a project that was initially developed but later put on hold – HBO now has a different, and potentially better, idea in the works.

The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, features Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk (played by Peter Claffey), a character who shares some traits with Jon Snow. Like Jon, Dunk comes from humble beginnings – Dunk grew up as an orphan in the poor district of Flea Bottom, while Jon was raised as a bastard. Despite their backgrounds, both men possess a strong moral compass and strive to live by the principles taught to them, even when it’s difficult, often more so than those of higher birth.

Dunk often struggles with internal conflict, as what’s morally right doesn’t always align with his own self-interest. This echoes a similar struggle Jon faced when his loyalty was tested between his family and the wildlings. While both are excellent fighters, it’s their strong sense of morality and honor that truly connect them within the Game of Thrones universe. Dunk embodies the qualities of a classic hero, making him a strong candidate to carry on Jon’s story, especially compared to the more complex and morally ambiguous characters in House of the Dragon.

Dunk Proves There’s No Need For Jon Snow’s Game Of Thrones Return

Watching Dunk and Egg, and really the whole A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms story, has shown me how much more there is to discover in Westeros beyond what we’ve seen in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Those other shows are fantastic, and I love the grand scale of them, but it’s so refreshing to see a different part of the Seven Kingdoms, with characters dealing with smaller, more personal problems. What’s really amazing is that even with lower stakes, the show still manages to explore similar themes and character journeys – like we’re seeing with Dunk and Egg. Honestly, if it can keep doing that and offer something fresh, I don’t think we even need Jon Snow to come back.

Honestly, I was always a little worried about a Jon Snow spin-off – it felt like a tough idea to pull off, and it keeps coming back to life! While exploring his struggles after everything that happened could be really compelling, the latest story idea sounds… well, just really depressing. Apparently, he’s dealing with PTSD, living alone, and he sent Ghost away – even after all the fan outrage about that in Season 8! It’s a bummer. But A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms feels completely different, and it’s great to see how much depth and variety this world still has, even with familiar faces.

Dunk isn’t just a copy of Jon Snow. He shares traits with other characters from Game of Thrones – Brienne of Tarth stands out, given their similar stature and honorable nature. He even echoes early Sansa Stark, who initially believed in the romantic ideals of knighthood. However, Dunk is unique, shaped by a tough upbringing and a struggle for survival, making him a compelling character in his own right.

New episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms release Sundays at 10pm ET on HBO and HBO Max.
