Game of Thrones’ Mad King Prequel Reveals Release Date

Seven years after it ended, Game of Thrones is popular again. HBO has successfully launched two spin-off series: House of the Dragon (which debuted in 2022) and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (which premiered this year). Now with multiple shows available, the franchise is expanding in surprising and exciting new directions.

HBO is developing several new projects set in the world of Game of Thrones. One is an animated series by Gennedy Tartakovsky (known for Samurai Jack, Primal, and Clone Wars) focusing on Lor Corlys Velaryon, the pirate lord nicknamed “the Sea Snake.” They’ve also announced a movie about Aegon the Conqueror, and surprisingly, a large-scale stage play based on Game of Thrones will be debuting in the UK.

Game of Thrones: The Mad King Reveals Its Release Date & Creative Team

A stage play titled Game of Thrones: The Mad King is being developed in the UK, at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. The play will focus on the final days of King Aerys II Targaryen – often called “The Mad King” – whose reign led to widespread chaos and the fall of his family. It covers the events of Robert’s Rebellion, when Robert Baratheon overthrew him. The production will also explore the secret romance between Aerys’ son, Rhaegar Targaryen, and Lyanna Stark, and the birth of their son, Jon Snow – a story that dramatically altered the course of Westeros’ history.

The show will officially premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on July 20th and run until September 5th. Promotional materials describe it as a large-scale stage production bringing a famous story from Westeros history to life. According to Variety, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre itself will be reconfigured for the show, putting the audience right in the middle of the action.

When the project was first announced, Dominic Cooke and Duncan Macmillan were named as the lead creators. Cooke had spent several years working with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin to develop the play. Now, the full creative team has been revealed, including puppeteers and movement directors Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell of Lume. Chloe Lamford will design the sets, Georgia McGuinness the costumes, Jon Clark the lighting, Will Stuart will compose the music, and Tom Gibbons will handle sound. Amy Ball will be in charge of casting, while Jeannette Nelson will focus on voice and text, and Hazel Holder will oversee actor dialects. Additional team members include associate director Emily Raymond, Scarlet Wilderink assisting with puppetry and movement, period dance consultant Francesca Roche, creative consultant Ti Mikkel, and associates Machiko Weston (set design), Alex Berry (costumes), Alex Twiselton (sound), and assistant director Lenore Gallegos.

George R.R. Martin, who began his career with the Royal Shakespeare Company, teamed up with Cooke to create this stage show – a project deeply meaningful to him. He’s also taking on the role of executive producer.

As a huge fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I’m thrilled you can now stream the original series and all the spinoffs on HBO Max! And if you’re like me and love to talk about where the story could go next, come join the discussion over on the ComicBook Forum – we’re always debating the future of the franchise.
