Although the original Game of Thrones ended, there’s a chance we could see a Season 9. While the finale wasn’t universally loved, HBO is building a Game of Thrones franchise with shows like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, both set to return in 2026, and others in the works. A ninth season could finally resolve some long-standing fan theories, but it remains to be seen if any future show will reach the same level of popularity as the original.
It feels like everything old is new again these days. We’ve seen major revivals and returns of beloved characters and shows recently â from the original stars of Star Wars to reboots of classics like Twin Peaks and Frasier. Even actors like Sarah Michelle Gellar are revisiting iconic roles (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and Robert Downey Jr. is switching gears after his time as Iron Man. With the upcoming Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum bringing back familiar faces, the possibility of a ninth season of Game of Thrones doesnât seem so far-fetched.
Although there were no clear indications beforehand, Kit Harington’s attempt to create a Jon Snow sequel suggests these storylines could be revisited. Potential continuations include Jon Snow’s adventures beyond the Wall, Arya’s exploration of lands west of Westeros, and Sansa Stark’s reign as Queen in the North. However, a revival should also definitively disprove two widely held fan theories.
Game of Thrones Season 9 Could End The Evil King Bran Stark Theory

The choice of Bran Stark as the new king of Westeros was a surprisingly divisive moment in the final season of Game of Thrones. For years, fans debated who would ultimately rule, with popular guesses including Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen â some even jokingly suggested characters like Hot Pie! Despite the Iron Throne being destroyed, very few predicted Bran would be the one to lead the continent.
One popular fan theory suggests Bran Stark secretly manipulated events throughout Game of Thrones to become king. As the Three-Eyed Raven, he could have orchestrated everything from the shadows, even influencing the past, to achieve his goal. This theory proposes Bran was behind key events like giving Arya the dagger, the Mad Kingâs actions, and even the creation of the Night King â all as part of a long-term plan to seize power.
I suspect the Three-Eyed Crow will be more developed in the books, and I wish the show had delved deeper into Branâs powers and their impact on him. However, I donât think the idea fully works. While the concept is interesting, even Bran claiming heâs no longer himself doesn’t justify such a drastic change to the character weâve followed since the beginning. Itâs likely too complicated to execute well without creating plot holes and ultimately weakening the reason for Bran becoming king.
While the final season of Game of Thrones could have been better â especially if Bran hadnât been absent for so long â his becoming king actually fits with George R.R. Martinâs overall themes. Martin often focuses on characters who are flawed, overlooked, or disadvantaged, and Branâs journey â from a boy dreaming of knighthood to a disabled leader â is a classic Martin twist. The character also has subtle connections to Arthurian legends, hinting at this outcome.
He also possesses the strength to rule â the story rarely favors those who seek power for its own sake, at least not in the long run â and he can learn from history to guide Westeros towards a better future. These are promising concepts that could be developed further in a ninth season, and they donât rely on complicated or villainous plots to succeed.
Game of Thrones Season 9 Should End The âDaenerys Was Resurrectedâ Theory

The final season of Game of Thrones sparked a lot of debate, and two of the most controversial parts were King Branâs ascension and Daenerys Targaryenâs turn to violence, culminating in her destruction of Kingâs Landing. While the idea behind Daenerysâs actions wasnât necessarily the problem, many fans struggled with her eventual death at the hands of Jon Snow. The fact that her dragon, Drogon, flew off with her body â seemingly towards Volantis in Essos â led many to believe she might be brought back to life.
The Red Priestesses, like Kinvaraâa known ally of Daenerysâare central to these theories. Considering weâve already witnessed the Lord of Light bring people back to life, it’s understandable why fans speculate Daenerys could be resurrected and return to Westeros seeking revenge.
Drogon probably flew Daenerys to Essos to cremate her, giving her a traditional Targaryen burial. This is a stronger ending for her story than bringing her back in a potential Season 9, because her character arc is complete, even if the ending wasnât well-received. She experienced everything â she freed people, ruled as queen, and sought to conquer. Bringing her back would offer no new direction for her story and would lessen the impact of her death. The show already flirted with resurrection, so another one isnât needed.
Even though Daenerys is gone, a potential ninth season of Game of Thrones could still focus on her story. Instead of bringing her back, the show could explore her lasting impact and how her choices and death affect the characters who knew her best. We could see how Tyrion deals with her betrayal, how Jon Snow is burdened by killing her, and how Kingâs Landing recovers. Examining her legacy and how sheâs remembered would be compelling, and it would be more powerful to keep her deceased.
You can watch Game of Thrones on HBO Max. The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms starts January 18, 2026, and the third season of House of the Dragon is coming out in summer 2026.
