Game Of Thrones Spinoff Aegon’s Conquest Gets Encouraging Script Update From Writer

Writer Mattson Tomlin shared positive news about the script for the upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff, Aegon’s Conquest. Despite the original series concluding in 2019, HBO is continuing to expand the Game of Thrones universe with several new shows. These include House of the Dragon, which will return for a third season in summer 2026, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, currently in its first season.

As a huge fan of the Game of Thrones world, I’m really excited about all the potential spinoffs. One that’s caught my attention is Aegon’s Conquest, which will tell the story of how Aegon Targaryen – along with his sister-wives and their dragons – first took control of Westeros. It’s set about 300 years before the events we saw in Game of Thrones. What’s interesting is that HBO is considering it as a possible TV series, but Warner Bros. is also thinking about making it a huge, epic movie – they’ve even described it as being on the scale of Dune!

Writer Mattson Tomlin recently gave fans a positive update on the Aegon’s Conquest script. He posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of filled notebooks labeled with the project’s name, along with other projects he’s working on. He described finishing the notebooks as ‘always satisfying,’ suggesting significant progress has been made.

Mattson Tomlin is making significant headway on the Game of Thrones spinoff, Aegon’s Conquest, having filled two notebooks with material. He revealed in August 2025, while interacting with fans on X, that he’s completed a substantial amount of scriptwriting for the series.

During a May 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, writer Mattson Tomlin discussed his conversations with George R.R. Martin. He explained that writing Aegon’s Conquest is a challenge similar to writing about historical figures like Napoleon or Alexander the Great, because there isn’t a lot of existing material to base the story on.

I’m still in the early stages of writing the script, and I’m having really productive conversations with George. He emphasized the importance of treating this story as historical fact – as if it actually happened. This differs from the original series because I don’t have a massive amount of source material to work with. Instead of thousands of pages, I’m focusing on a couple of hundred from ‘Fire & Blood,’ which contain a lot of helpful details. It’s becoming similar to writing a biography about a historical figure like Napoleon or Alexander the Great – we know a lot about their lives, conquests, and the people around them. Those events form the plot, and my job is to explore the deeper meaning, the emotions, and the impact of those events. The challenge is that we lack direct accounts of what people said or thought.

The original Game of Thrones series was based on A Song of Ice and Fire. House of the Dragon uses Fire & Blood, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts the Dunk and Egg stories. However, Aegon’s Conquest is the first Game of Thrones show that isn’t a direct adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s novels.
