The renowned actor, recognized by many as Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones, will reappear on our screens, brandishing a sword and donning armor, in the historical epic produced by BBC titled King & Conqueror.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: I delve into an intriguing eight-episode journey that unfolds the connection between James Norton as Harold of Wessex and Coster-Waldau portraying William of Normandy. These two historical figures are on a path to cross swords at the epic Battle of Hastings in 1066, a clash I’m eagerly awaiting to witness unfold.
The synopsis says, “Two individuals, neither seeking the English throne, were drawn into a conflict over it due to unavoidable circumstances and intense personal desire.
Indeed, while the setting features warriors riding horses and wielding swords, this tale, however, deviates significantly from what you might expect.
He later admitted that George RR Martin, the creator of the Game of Thrones series, drew significant inspiration from this historical era.
I recall donning my armor for the first time and recognizing the insignia, identical to those of the Lannisters from Game of Thrones, depicting lions.
“So there are definitely similarities visually, but it’s completely different.”

Alongside diving back into intense rehearsals for their characters as William the Conqueror and his companion, Coster-Waldau and Norton adopted an Icelandic tradition known to many, aiming to be at the top of their game for the series’ physically challenging scenes.
In a casual and understandable manner, Norton remarked that Reykjavík, where the filming took place, is remarkably small. He went on to explain that York has a larger population than all of Iceland, and the locals are particularly fond of their swimming pools, both cold and hot plunges. Interestingly, Coster-Waldau had never experienced this before, and it turned out to be quite an unexpected delight for him.
The first time, it feels as if death is imminent, but then you find yourself thinking, surprisingly, this is quite pleasant,” he continued.
Norton noted that the training was particularly delightful for them as they often incorporated a unique tradition – dipping in cold water followed by a warm water bath.
Nikolaj and I would often descend, perform our daredevil acts, and leave afterward… We needed to stay sharp. We aren’t spring chickens any longer.
