With George R.R. Martin hinting at several new shows connected to the world of ‘Game of Thrones‘ on HBO, many fans are hoping to see favorite characters reappear in Westeros. However, it seems that, along with Kit Harington, another key actor isn’t interested in revisiting the realm of dragons and political intrigue.
Emilia Clarke recently spoke with The New York Times about her new series, Ponies, a Cold War drama where she plays Bea, a woman who becomes entangled in the world of espionage after her husband, an intelligence agent, unexpectedly dies. This role is a significant departure from her work on Game of Thrones and the fantastical world of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, a series she has no plans to revisit. When discussing Game of Thrones, Clarke stated:
I was always rushing ahead and never stopped to appreciate what was happening. I didn’t realize I’d want to remember these moments. You probably won’t ever see me near a dragon again, let alone riding one.
The actress owes much of her fame to her role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, but she didn’t realize how all-consuming the show would become, especially as it was only her third professional acting job. The timing of the series’ end was particularly difficult, coinciding with the start of the Covid pandemic and a complete halt to production in Hollywood. She described the experience as leading to a mental breakdown, saying it was the first time in her career she’d truly stopped working and that the pandemic seemed to begin at just the right moment to exacerbate the situation.
Emilia Clarke Used the Pandemic as a Reset

HBO
After the demanding experience of filming Game of Thrones, both physically and emotionally, Emilia Clarke welcomed the break the pandemic provided. It allowed her time to pause and consider things she might not have otherwise.
She explained that the experience made her confront questions she’d been avoiding for a long time, particularly about her career goals. After leaving Game of Thrones, she started to understand she could take control of her work and make choices that truly reflected her own preferences. She felt like she’d been propelled forward without really having a say in the direction of her career.

Emilia Clarke has acted in many different kinds of projects, including science fiction like Terminator: Genisys, the superhero series Secret Invasion, and even the romantic comedy Last Christmas. However, it seems she’s now looking for roles that are more realistic and down-to-earth. Her new series, Ponies, definitely fits that description, and will be available to stream on Peacock starting January 15th, giving fans a chance to see the actress known as Daenerys Targaryen in a completely new light.
