
This month marks the 15th anniversary of the popular HBO television series. This celebration happens just before the release of a new installment in the franchise, which is set to premiere in three months.
A new stage play, Game of Thrones: The Mad King, is coming this year, and the Royal Shakespeare Company has now revealed the dates. It will run at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from July 20th to September 5th, 2026, with the official opening night on August 8th. Performances in July may be previews for the press and invited guests. Tickets will first be available to priority bookers on April 14th, and then to the general public on April 22nd.
Game of Thrones: The Mad King Debuts This Summer
The production team is now complete. Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell will direct the puppetry and movement, while Chloe Lamford is designing the set. Costumes will be created by Georgie McGuinness, with lighting by Jon Clark and music by Will Stuart. Tom Gibbons is handling sound, and Amy Ball is in charge of casting. Jeannette Nelson will lead voice and text coaching, assisted by dialect coach Hazel Holder. The play has been adapted by Duncan Macmillan and will be directed by Dominic Cooke.
Emily Raymond is the associate director, and Scarlet Wilderink is the associate puppetry and movement director. The team also includes Francesca Roche, a period dance consultant; Ti Mikkel, a creative consultant; Machiko Weston, associate set designer; Alex Berry, associate costume designer; Alex Twiselton, associate sound designer; and Lenore Gallegos, assistant director.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is excited to announce the team and dates for Game of Thrones: The Mad King. According to co-artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey, the production will feature a talented group of theatre professionals bringing George R. R. Martin’s world to life on stage. The RSC is reconfiguring the Royal Shakespeare Theatre to fully immerse the audience in the story, creating an epic and spectacular experience. They describe the production as a thrilling collaboration and are eager to share it with audiences.
This large-scale play is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s novels and uses the tagline, “Wars aren’t won by those with most cause, but whose story’s best told.” The story takes place in Westeros years before the events in the books, and will feature younger versions of familiar characters like Ned Stark, Robert Baratheon, and Jaime Lannister. Lyanna Stark will also appear in the play.
The world of Game of Thrones continues to grow with new shows in the works. HBO is developing future seasons of both prequel series, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Plus, a brand new series focusing on Aegon’s conquest is also currently being planned.
