It’s worth noting that Windows remains the dominant operating system among gamers, but the recent Steam Hardware Survey suggests there’s still potential for growth in this area. The survey indicates a minor upward trend in the proportion of users opting for Windows.
In fact, it’s noticeable that many gamers are migrating towards Windows 11, as the data shows, not only compared to previous versions like Windows 10, but also in a broader context.
On Steam, Windows 11 holds the title as the most widely used individual operating system version, and this popularity grew by approximately 1.54% in June, bringing its market share to nearly 60% of the total Windows user base.
Based on the decreasing numbers, it appears that Windows 10 is a significant contributor, but it’s not the sole factor. The overall rise in Windows usage seems to be influencing this trend, while there have been slight declines in both macOS and Linux usage. So, could it be that some gamers are returning to Windows 11?
Microsoft’s latest move to offer an additional year of security support for Windows 10 users could potentially make them stick with this version for some more time.
At least Windows 7 continues to decrease, and is at a such an incredibly small share now.
Although Windows 11 hasn’t quite doubled the usage of Windows 10 just yet, it’s rapidly approaching that mark. This progress indicates a positive trend as more people are adopting Windows 11. Meanwhile, Windows 10 has been gradually losing ground in the overall desktop market share, and at the last assessment, Windows 11 was evenly matched with it.
Indeed, it remains unclear how users unable to upgrade to Windows 11 will manage in the near future, given the recent extension of support. It might take some time yet before we witness any significant changes.
Will Steam’s use on Linux grow more prevalent, or will Windows 11 manage to attract even more users? Keep an eye out for updates, everyone.

One notable finding from the recent hardware survey, as it appears to me, is the GPU that Steam gamers predominantly use at present.
For quite some time, the respected and relatively budget-friendly NVIDIA RTX 3060 has held the throne as the top choice for many gamers. However, its reign has come to an end. The new contender is not the desktop version RTX 4060, but surprisingly, the laptop GPU version of it.
On our site, we review numerous gaming laptops, and there are many excellent ones available. However, it’s quite unexpected to find a laptop leading the most frequently used on Steam. Given its affordability, this is somewhat less astonishing.
As a tech enthusiast, I’ve noticed that when it comes to graphical performance, desktops continue to reign supreme, with the RTX 3060 laptop GPU being the only other contender in the top tier. However, this trend might be hinting at a shift in gaming habits, suggesting that portable powerhouses are becoming increasingly appealing.
Apart from being utilized in gaming laptops, the RTX 4060 is also found in a variety of computers not primarily designed for gaming. Given that high-end graphics cards can exceed the cost of an entire RTX 4060 laptop, it’s quite reasonable to consider it a wise investment offering better value for money.
AMD’s ascent persists, narrowing the divide between it and Intel more significantly. The release of devices such as the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally is expected to sustain this trend.
One thing remains the same though; it’s a great time to be a PC gamer.
