Toshihiro Nagoshi is well-known for his work on the Yakuza series, so it wasn’t surprising that his new game, Gang of Dragon, felt similar. However, despite the similarities, the developers built Gang of Dragon entirely from scratch.
In a New Year’s message on the studio’s website, Nagoshi shared that the team was incredibly motivated and encouraged by the amazing support and excitement from fans worldwide.
He explained that Gang of Dragon is a story about people on the fringes of society, set in Tokyo’s Kabukicho district. He emphasized that the game’s world, visuals, and gameplay are all being carefully designed and developed from the start. The team is dedicated to making a game they’re proud to share with players worldwide.
Although there’s no confirmed release date yet, Nagoshi expressed hope that this year will bring “a wonderful and fulfilling game life for all players.”
I’m really excited about Gang of Dragon! It stars Ma Dong-seok, who you might know from Train to Busan and Nameless Gangster – he even did some work with Kojima Productions on Physint. He’s playing this tough guy, Shin Ji-seong, who’s mixed up with the Korean mafia. The story details are still a bit mysterious, but from what I’ve read, it’s going to be about him building some really strong relationships that make him question what he’s even fighting for. Sounds pretty intense!
Similar to the Yakuza series, Gang of Dragon focuses on close-quarters fighting, using both your fists and a variety of weapons, and also includes gunplay. A major new feature is the ability to drive and participate in fast-paced, action-packed sequences, with options to customize your vehicles.
We’re still awaiting full details, but it’s been a significant period for Nagoshi. He departed Sega in 2021 and founded a new studio with NetEase Games in 2022. He once compared his new venture to a Quentin Tarantino movie, suggesting it might be more violent and have a darker, more humorous tone than his previous Yakuza games.
