Gavin & Stacey icon reveals key inspiration he took from Claudia Winkleman for ruthless new show

A fresh reality show is set to debut on BBC One, and if you enjoy The Traitors, this news should make you happy!

Upcoming show, Destination X, features a band of adventurers navigating an exciting journey across unknown territories, guided only by cryptic hints that lead them to discover hidden locations along the way.

In this ten-episode series, viewers will be captivated by the contestants attempting to figure out their locations, yet the competitor who guesses farthest from their real location will find their journey within the competition has ended.

In a seemingly harmless manner, the core of this series involves subtle manipulation. As the competitors inch toward Destination X, unexpected twists and betrayals may cause them to turn against one another.

The show is presented by Rob Brydon, often referred to as both the host and the “master of strings” due to his skillful direction of the cast and audience. Through this guidance, they embark on an exciting adventure together. In the series, Brydon’s quirky fashion choices and quick-witted responses are central elements, while also paying tribute to a popular broadcasting figure.

Prior to the airing of the new show, it was disclosed in a pre-show Q&A that the star, who is well known for his work on Gavin & Stacey and Would I Lie to You?, drew inspiration from Claudia Winkleman‘s hosting style on The Traitors when preparing for Destination X.

He explained further: “I aimed to serve as a connection between the audience and the competitors. As many say, they are indeed the main attractions. Throughout the season, their individualities truly shine. And revisiting that first episode now, one can witness the genesis of relationships and personal growth among the contestants.

He’s not off base, given that the contestants hail from diverse backgrounds, a trait that might work to their advantage as time progresses. This diversity was not something the showrunners shied away from.

As a passionate admirer, I’d say that Dan Adamson emphasized the significance of having a diverse and identifiable ensemble for the project.

We didn’t hesitate to include skilled players on our team. One member is an author who specializes in crime novels, familiar with unexpected plot developments. Another is a retired detective sergeant. We find their background intriguing, hoping they might possess hidden abilities that could excel in this game, as it relies heavily on deduction and observation. Our aim was to have them be proficient in these areas.

Destination X begins on Wednesday 30th July at 9pm on BBC One.
