GDC Survey Reveals Developers Are Twice as Interested in Making Games for PS5 Than Xbox

The recent State of the Game Industry survey from the Game Developers Conference asked game developers about their preferred platforms. The findings offer some surprising insights.

The survey asked over 2,300 developers which platforms they found most interesting. They were able to choose multiple options.

The clear favorite among developers was the PC, chosen by a large majority – 80 percent. This isn’t surprising.

The PlayStation 5 was the most sought-after console for game development, with 40% of respondents indicating a desire to create games for it. It came in second place overall in terms of preferred platforms.

In comparison, 39% chose Switch 2, while only 20% picked Xbox Series X|S – that’s half the number who chose PS5.

So, I was reading VGC, and it looks like people might be a little less excited about Xbox lately. The survey they mentioned showed that 40% of gamers released their last game on Xbox Series X|S, while a bigger chunk – 47% – said they released it on PlayStation 5. It kinda suggests things aren’t looking as rosy for Microsoft’s console right now.

The survey also asked developers what’s most important when choosing which platforms to build for. Reaching the largest possible audience was the top priority for 78% of them. How well they could monetize their work (44%) and how easy it is for people to find their apps (43%) were the next most important factors.

This gives a good overview of how different gaming platforms compare. While PC is likely to remain the most popular choice, the PlayStation 5 seems appealing because it has a large player base.
