Microsoft is preparing for its Xbox Games Showcase and a dedicated presentation for Gears of War: E-Day in June. Recently, Liam McIntyre, who voices the main character JD Fenix in Gears of War 4, shared that the developers had initially considered continuing the story from the previous trilogy instead of creating a prequel. McIntyre mentioned on social media that he spoke with the team at The Coalition about Gears 6, but they ultimately decided to pursue a different direction and create Gears of War: E-Day.
When asked about the unfinished story arc that began with Gears of War 4, McIntyre expressed hope that the developers would revisit it. He said he cares about the team and wants them to create a Gears game that truly captures what fans love about the series. He’d be thrilled if that meant continuing the original trilogy, calling it ‘happy days’.
We made Gears 4 and Gears 5, and there was talk about potentially making a Gears 6,” he said. “But the team decided they wanted to work on a new project, and from what I’ve seen, it’s looking really good. I’m excited to play it.”
Following the events of Gears 5, actor John DiMaggio (JD) has an idea for how the game developers, The Coalition, could bring his character back in a future Gears 6. He suggests the Swarm enemies somehow resurrected JD and are now controlling him. This could lead to a dramatic storyline where JD’s father, Marcus Fenix – the hero of the original Gears trilogy – joins the battle to save his son.
He assured me he had a solution no matter what I decided. He’s really hoping Del is a core character, and if that’s true, Marcus will go off the rails. We also find out JD is back, but Swarm is controlling him, forcing his dad to battle him. Somehow, we manage to save JD, though the details are still unclear – or even if it’s important, honestly.
In Gears of War 4, players met JD, who was revealed to be Marcus’s son. The game takes place twenty years after Gears of War 3 and focuses on a new enemy called the Swarm, which is similar to the Locust. The story also features the COG as a secondary antagonist, as they try to bring Outsiders back under their control.
Though the story ultimately unites the crew with the COG, Gears 5 introduces an interesting complication. JD makes a devastating mistake during an evacuation when he calls in a Hammer of Dawn strike, unintentionally killing civilians. The game primarily follows Kait as the main character, and she begins experiencing visions connected to the Locust.
The newest Gears of War game, E-Day, is coming out later this year. It’s a prequel set before the original game, showing the beginning of the Locust invasion on the planet Sera. Players will again control Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they battle through the chaos in the city of Kalona.
Liam J. McIntyre, who played JD in Gears of War, shared his thoughts on the series, specifically comparing E-Day to the upcoming Gears 6. He expressed hope for a return to the roots of what made the original Gears games so popular, saying he just wants the developers to create a game they’re proud of and that fans will love. He hinted that if they do that, it might naturally lead back to ideas similar to those in E-Day.
