Fumito Ueda, the acclaimed designer behind games like Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian, and ICO, recently revealed his new project, gen ATLAS. He explained in an interview with Eurogamer that the title gen ATLAS is more significant than it appears, containing multiple layers of meaning.
Ueda began by pointing out that the word “gen” has a variety of meanings, including origins, genes, and the act of creation. He explained that “ATLAS” is similarly versatile, referring to both world maps and a bone in the human neck.
Ueda began by explaining the meaning of ‘Gen.’ It doesn’t have just one definition, but several related ideas. These include ‘genesis’ – meaning the beginning or origin, ‘gene,’ and ‘generate,’ which refers to the process of creating something.
I also chose the name ‘Atlas’. Many people immediately think of world atlases and maps, but it’s also the name of the first vertebra in the neck, which connects the head to the spine. You can see that connection reflected in the robot head’s design. I felt ‘Atlas’ would be a fitting title, both for its common meaning and anatomical reference, and would encompass the entire world we’re creating.
Later in the interview, Ueda mentioned that gen ATLAS, while featuring a large companion and an adventurous journey, will feel more like Shadow of the Colossus than his previous game, The Last Guardian. He explained this is because gen ATLAS will focus on a similar balance between exploring the world and taking action, and the game’s vast scale will contribute to that feeling.
He explained that Shadow of the Colossus feels the most comparable to their new game. While not identical in detail, it shares a similar balance between action and the vastness of the world, including exploration, travel, and smooth transitions between areas. He believes it’s the closest match among their three previous titles in terms of overall similarities.
I was so excited to see the first trailer for gen Atlas from Ueda’s new studio, genDESIGN! It was pretty short on details, honestly – we didn’t get much of a look at the story or how the gameplay will actually work. But the world they showed us looked amazing – kind of ruined and filled with the broken pieces of robots. Apparently, you play as someone who can actually pilot the heads of these robots, which seems like it’ll be really important for getting around, since the world is clearly tough for normal humans to navigate.
The release date for gen ATLAS hasn’t been announced yet. It’s being created for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The PC version will be exclusively available on the Epic Games Store due to a publishing agreement with Epic Games.
