Honestly, as a TV fan, things are getting frustrating with all the streaming services. It’s great we have so much to watch, but it feels like shows drag on forever with huge gaps between seasons, and then those seasons are super short! What really bugs me though is when they start making spin-offs of everything. It just messes with how I feel about the original show I loved, and it feels like they’re just trying to milk it for all it’s worth.
As a longtime Star Wars fan, I have to say the jump into The Mandalorian season 3 was jarring. If you skipped The Book of Boba Fett based on the reviews – and honestly, a lot of us did – you’d be completely lost when Din Djarin and Grogu suddenly reappeared, zipping around the galaxy in a new ship. It felt like an entire season had passed! But the truth is, you only missed a couple of episodes of a spinoff that, let’s just say, wasn’t exactly a masterpiece.
As a huge fan of The Boys on Prime Video, I loved how it originally poked fun at the whole superhero obsession, especially the way Marvel announced these massive, years-long plans with ‘phases’ and all the endless sequels and team-ups. It was brilliantly satirical! But honestly, it’s a little ironic now, because The Boys universe is expanding just as much! We’ve already got the animated anthology Diabolical and the college-based show Gen V, and I hear there are at least two more spin-offs in the works. It’s funny to see it happen to the show that used to make fun of it!
So far, The Boys has been consistently excellent. Both of its spinoff series have been just as good as the original, adding to the story without taking away from it. However, not everyone wants to watch extra shows – some people prefer to stick with just The Boys, or maybe another series like The Mandalorian.
If you haven’t seen Gen V yet, here’s what you should know before The Boys’ final season starts: the students from Gen V have officially joined forces with the Boys.
The Gen V Kids Have Joined Forces With The Boys
Heading into season 5 of The Boys, the biggest thing to understand is that the characters from Gen V are now working with the team. While The Boys will likely explain who these new characters are, it’s good to know that some new faces will be joining the fight.
The show, which originally poked fun at the many crossovers in Marvel stories, is now creating its own team of superheroes. Similar to how the Guardians of the Galaxy teamed up with the Avengers, the young heroes from Gen V are now working with the characters from The Boys.
The second season of Gen V ended on a disappointing note, with the students forced to escape their school after a seminar unexpectedly turned into a deadly competition. They eventually joined forces with Starlight and A-Train. This means the team of heroes in The Boys now has a few more members as the story moves forward.
Thomas Godolkin Attempted A Plan To Control Homelander
Let me tell you, Hamish Linklater saved season two of Gen V. While the season overall felt a little flat, Linklater as Dean Cipher was absolutely phenomenal – a truly unforgettable villain. He completely took over every scene he was in. The character itself was fascinating: Cipher took the reins at Godolkin University and immediately started transforming it into a boot camp, prepping all the supes for some kind of coming war. It was a bold move for the show, and Linklater nailed it.
The shocking reveal is that Cipher, the seemingly powerful villain who’s a university dean, is actually an ordinary person being manipulated. Behind the scenes, it’s Thomas Godolkin – a famous Vought scientist and the founder of Godolkin University – who’s pulling the strings. He was secretly building an army of super-powered individuals as part of a sinister plan to control Homelander. Godolkin believed he could take over Homelander’s mind and powers by controlling others.
He needs support, which is why he’s building a team of superpowered individuals. With Homelander now holding a significant position within the U.S. government, it will be much more difficult to challenge him.
Marie Moreau Became One Of The Boys’ Strongest Supes
As a huge fan of both The Boys and its spin-off Gen V, I have to talk about Marie Moreau, the main character. Her power is…intense. She can control blood with her mind – basically, blood-bending, and it’s as messy as it sounds! She can make your blood vessels explode, heal injuries, or even weaponize her own blood. Trust me, the special effects team is having a field day with all the blood bursts – it’s a signature part of the show!
Marie’s first period was incredibly difficult, even worse than what Carrie White went through. While she wasn’t embarrassed in front of her school, a tragic accident resulted in the death of her parents, causing a permanent rift with her sister. In the second season of Gen V, her sister reappeared as an important character, but was killed off again soon after.
Haunted by the loss of her parents, Marie was determined to save her sister. In doing so, she discovered an incredible ability, potentially the most powerful one in the world of The Boys. She managed to revive her sister from death by restoring her blood flow – a feat even Homelander can’t accomplish. This newfound power could be a huge advantage for the Boys.
Godolkin Was Working (& In A Relationship) With Sister Sage
The second season of Gen V started with a strange scene: Cipher was with a man in a hyperbaric chamber while also being intimate with Sister Sage. At the time, it seemed odd, but we later learned the man in the chamber, Thomas Godolkin, was actually controlling Cipher’s body and forcing the encounter with Sage, making the situation even more disturbing.
This development could be important for the final season of The Boys. Although Thomas was killed by Marie in the Gen V finale, making his return improbable, his plan with Sage might still unfold. Sage is a skilled manipulator and strategist, so she’s unlikely to abandon a well-laid plan simply because Thomas is gone.
Homelander Already Has A Grudge Against The Gen V Kids
The last season of The Boys will center around the vigilante group’s desperate attempt to finally kill Homelander. This has been the core goal of the show since the beginning: Billy Butcher is committed to eliminating all superpowered people, but his main target is Homelander, whom he wants to kill to avenge his wife and all those Homelander has harmed along the way.
The main question heading into season 5 is whether the Boys can finally defeat Homelander. They now have help from former members of the Seven and the new heroes from Gen V, giving them a better chance. However, it’s important to remember this fight isn’t just about the Boys – it’s deeply personal for everyone involved.
Both Starlight and A-Train have struggled under Homelander’s control, and the students at Godolkin University (featured in Gen V) had a dangerous encounter with him during the first season. The season finale saw Homelander arrive on campus, furious with Marie for targeting other superpowered individuals—despite the fact that he’s killed many supes himself.
Following their clash with Homelander, the students from Gen V were arrested for their actions. As we head into season 5 of The Boys, it’s important to remember that these students now have a strong, personal grudge against Homelander, and he definitely doesn’t like them either.
The writers of The Boys likely understand not everyone has watched Gen V, so they’ll probably provide explanations within the show to catch viewers up. Season 5 of The Boys starts streaming on Amazon Prime Video on April 8th.
