It’s often said that characters in comic books can’t stay dead, and the second season of Gen V nearly confirmed that with the surprising return of a superhero previously believed to be deceased. While The Boys has played with this idea before – notably with the replacement of Black Noir – this situation is different. Seeing a character return after being definitively killed is a bigger twist than simply recasting a role. The show originally planned this return without relying on flashbacks or clones, even though the character had already appeared multiple times after his supposed death in Season 1.
Before the season finale of Gen V, Eric Kripke shared with ComicBook’s Bryan Cairns just how close they were to bringing Patrick Schwarzenegger’s character, Golden Boy, back for another appearance. When asked if they had considered it, Kripke explained:
Yes, we did. As I recall, there were a few dream sequences, though I can’t quite remember who was dreaming them – maybe Sam. I know those ideas definitely made it into the outlines, especially involving the Golden Boy character. Patrick, meanwhile, was filming a small, independent project about a hotel – a really low-budget thing that I don’t think many people ever saw. He was also incredibly busy with The White Lotus and all the related publicity, so we just couldn’t find a time that worked for everyone.
Could Patrick Schwarzenegger Still Return To Gen V?
Despite difficulties finding time in their schedules, Arnold Schwarzenegger was interested in reprising his role, and the showrunners were eager to have him back. Kripke described Schwarzenegger as “lovely” and said he’d gladly work with him again, praising him as a genuinely good person. Schwarzenegger himself previously told ScreenRant he only missed out on appearing due to scheduling conflicts and hoped to be involved in the future. He suggested a possible return for season three or another opportunity, leaving fans hopeful.
The actor’s connection to the world of The Boys goes back further than his role in Gen V. He originally auditioned for the part of Homelander and made a strong enough impression that he was later asked to audition for the Gen V spinoff. He shared this story on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
The creators of the Gen V spin-off reached out to me because they remembered my audition for the role of Homelander. They asked me to audition for Golden Boy, a character they described as a younger, smaller-scale version of Homelander. Honestly, the character was portrayed as a genuinely good person—a nice kid—who was having a hard time adjusting to the responsibilities of being a superhero and dealing with the intense fame that came with it.
The emotional connection is incredibly strong. While it’s unclear how he might return, the show has already established the possibility of cloning, and the source material features a disturbing form of resurrection that leaves people as mindless creatures. It wouldn’t be a pleasant return, but there’s still a chance he could come back.
