**Warning: Spoilers ahead for Gen V season 2 episode 4.**
Season 2 of Gen V has finally explained one of its biggest mysteries: what powers Cipher (Hamish Linklater) actually has.
The new Dean at Godolkin University has been causing problems for Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair), and things came to a head in episode 4 when evidence suggested she’d misjudged him.
In the fourth episode, Cipher made Marie and Jordan (played by London Thor and Derek Luh) fight each other in a public boxing match. Now, they must work with Cate to try and defeat him.
Now that Cate has her powers back, she realizes she can’t force Cipher to do anything. This leads the team to a surprising discovery: Cipher doesn’t actually have the V gene in his blood.

Marie believes Cipher is actually a normal human, concealing the fact that he has no special abilities. However, she quickly discovers she’s mistaken when Cipher invades Jordan’s mind, compelling them to violently attack Marie.
It seems the rumors were true: Cipher is pulling the strings, able to control people he meets. Surprisingly, he doesn’t even need physical contact – he demonstrated this by controlling someone from a distance during the fight.
The mystery of why Marie couldn’t detect Compound V in his blood still lingers, and this discovery could be terrifying for everyone – not just Marie, Jordan, Emma, Cate, and Sam, but for the entire world of The Boys.
If Cipher can control anyone – even superpowered individuals – and use their abilities, he could easily turn someone as strong as Marie into a tool for his own purposes.
It’s possible he could even take control of Homelander. Given his support for Supes, Cipher and Homelander seem to be on the same side right now, but it’s unclear if that will remain true.
We’ll likely discover more details about Cipher’s abilities – and any flaws they might have – in the next few weeks. But right now, things are looking bleak for the students at God U.
