SPOILER ALERT: This post discusses major plot points from the Season 2 finale of Gen V. The truth is out: the main villain of Gen V Season 2 isn’t Cipher, but the founder of the school, the immensely powerful Thomas Godolkin. Godolkin is a master manipulator who controls people like puppets, and he was secretly controlling Doug (aka Cipher) until Cipher was severely injured. Once Godolkin was fully healed, he began systematically eliminating supes he considered weak or unworthy.
The second season of Gen V ends with a final, intense showdown between the students – Sam, Emma, Cate, Jordan, Marie, and Annabeth – and the people at Godolkin. Their risky plan might actually work, but not without potentially devastating consequences.
During a discussion filled with spoilers, Gen V creator Eric Kripke revealed details about the season 2 finale. He discussed the arrival of Godolkin, future storylines for Gen V, season five of The Boys, a possible rematch between Marie and Homelander, more on Golden Boy, and what’s coming in Vought Rising.
This season hinted that Godolkin might be the key to dealing with Homelander and other corrupt superheroes. What discussions led to his reappearance?
Much of that cleverness came from Michele Fazekas, an executive producer on Gen V. She pitched a fantastic twist – the idea that the strange creature Cipher kept around might actually be the key to everything. However, it turned out Marie was tricked into releasing the show’s main villain, which ultimately led back to Godolkin. Looking back, it makes perfect sense – he was Frederick Vought’s trusted aide, so of course he’s a villain. Hamish Linklater was brilliant as Cipher, perfectly portraying both a terrifying villain and, later, a seemingly harmless character. It was a joy to watch his performance.
What impact did the finale have on the Gen V characters, and how do you see their stories evolving? What consequences will the group face after their confrontation with him?
Students are realizing Godolkin isn’t a good school. Unless things change dramatically, many will eventually feel they’ve reached their limit and want to leave.
What truly propels the story forward is the ending of Gen V, where Annie and A-Train recruit the students to join a resistance movement. This effectively launches the events of The Boys Season 5, marking the start of an underground fight against Homelander’s oppressive rule. They’re facing overwhelming odds, but they’re determined to challenge him. When The Boys begins, it’s six months later, and we jump right into the thick of things, building on everything that’s been established.
We’re excited to see the Gen V characters appearing in The Boys, but does this mean Gen V itself is over? Are we still likely to get a third season?
We’re eager to make a third season of Gen V. The characters will continue to play important roles, providing key information, but we’re committed to keeping Gen V and The Boys as separate shows. There’s plenty more story to tell with Gen V, and we have a fantastic pitch for Season 3. However, whether we get to make it depends on how well Season 2 performs. If you’re considering watching, please do so now – your viewership can help us get a Season 3!
People are saying Marie is as strong as Homelander. They’ve clashed before, and it didn’t go well. If they fought again, what do you think would happen? What kind of fight would you like to see?
I really want to see Homelander get defeated – he’s earned it. While Marie is incredibly powerful, she’s still young and learning to manage her abilities. She’s not an instant master like Neo in The Matrix; she needs time to grow and will likely face obstacles along the way, which is what makes her character compelling. However, a head-on fight with Homelander might not go well for her. Plus, plenty of other people are eager to take him down.
We’re big fans of Patrick Schwarzenegger. Have you considered bringing his character, Golden Boy, back into the show?
Yes, we definitely did. As I recall, there were a few dream sequences, though I can’t quite remember whose dreams they were – maybe Sam’s. I know Golden Boy appeared in the outlines for those scenes. Patrick, meanwhile, was filming a small independent project about a hotel – a really small one, actually, and I don’t think many people ever saw it [laughter]. Of course, he was also incredibly busy with The White Lotus and all the related publicity. It just didn’t seem like we could make the schedules align. But he’s stayed in touch and has always been wonderful to work with. I’d collaborate with him again without hesitation – he’s a genuinely kind and good person.
As a huge fan of The Boys, I’m so excited to see this universe keep growing! They’re currently filming Vought Rising up in Toronto, and I’m really curious to see how it’s going to connect to the main show. I’m hoping it’ll fill in some backstory or maybe show us a different side of things within that crazy world they’ve built.
I believe this will unexpectedly bridge some key story gaps. There are reveals I don’t want to spoil, things people won’t see coming. It definitely establishes the beginnings of Vought, but also takes some unexpected paths that will likely surprise viewers and expand their understanding of the world and what’s happening within it.
