Japanese Gen Z are like tiny, twitchy detectives when it comes to crypto scams. A recent survey of 1,486 folks across Japan discovered that these sprightly youngsters spot dodgy schemes on social media faster than you can say “fiddlesticks!” Meanwhile, older generations wander around scratching their heads, wondering what a blockchain even is.
The generational divide shows Japan’s crypto trust problem isn’t one-size-fits-all – it’s more like a wobbly chocolate cake, full of lumps and surprises.
Gen Z Sniffs Out Scams, Boomers Trip Over Buttons
Tokyo-based consulting wizards at Clabo asked in February 2026 why people think crypto is suspicious. The top reason overall? “I don’t understand how it works” (23.3%). Second place went to rollercoaster price swings at 21.1%, and the sneaky fraudsters claimed 19.2% of the blame.
But peek at the generations and the story gets juicier. Gen Z worry mostly about social media scams – fake giveaways, shady promotions, and all manner of digital trickery. Boomers, poor dears, fret about blockchain’s mind-boggling complexity instead.
Millennials, on the other hand, are the brave explorers of the crypto world. They invest more than any other group and hunt down information like squirrels hoarding nuts for winter.
Across all ages, half of the survey respondents have never touched crypto. Only 33.7% currently own digital treasures, and a disheartened 15.7% invested once but scuttled away when the going got tough.
YouTube: The New Oracle of Investment Wisdom
When it comes to crypto gossip, traditional news sites rank first at 38.4%, social media follows at 36.7%, and YouTube peeks in at 31.6%. But for actual money decisions, YouTube jumps ahead like a hyperactive frog, snagging first place at 27%.
The survey hints that Japan’s crypto world is still in its alphabet-learning phase. Clabo, masters of wallet recovery and digital wizardry, urge the creation of more digestible educational content – tailored to each generation, from wily youngsters to befuddled elders.
