It’s been nearly 15 years since George Lucas sold Star Wars and Lucasfilm to Disney. Since then, the franchise has expanded greatly with new movies and shows like The Mandalorian and Andor. However, fan reactions to these changes have been mixed, and some have wished Lucas would return to fix what they see as problems with Disney’s take on Star Wars. Now, Lucas has shared his final thoughts on the matter, and it’s not what many fans want to hear.
George Lucas recently told the Wall Street Journal (via IGN) that he’s no longer actively involved with Star Wars. He’s now dedicating his time to the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which is scheduled to open in Los Angeles next year, and will focus on storytelling through various art forms – not just Star Wars.
George Lucas explained that after Disney acquired Star Wars, they naturally put their own creative stamp on it. He added that he’s moved on from the franchise, focusing on other projects like building a museum, which he finds to be a more challenging undertaking than filmmaking.
Star Wars Will Be Part of George Lucas’ New Museum, But Only a Small Part
It’s not surprising to hear Lucas discuss moving beyond Star Wars. He’s long felt that some of the core ideas from the original films—especially regarding The Force—were lost when Disney began making the sequel trilogy, and he previously accepted that as a consequence of relinquishing creative control. However, his recent comments feel more final, especially considering his passion project: a museum he’s been developing since 2018. While the museum will include some Star Wars elements, its primary focus is the extensive collection of art and artifacts he’s assembled over six decades – a project that has cost nearly $1 billion.
Lucas explained that this Star Wars vehicle design exhibit is just one of 33 displays at the museum, and he only agreed to it reluctantly. He wanted to ensure fans wouldn’t visit and be disappointed that Star Wars wasn’t represented.
Letting Go of Star Wars Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Abandoning the Franchise
I’ve heard that George Lucas is really stepping back from Star Wars and wants to let others take the lead, which is great. He’s moved on to other projects now, but it seems he still keeps an eye on things. Apparently, he’ll sometimes visit the sets of the new movies and shows. Dave Filoni even mentioned in 2024 that he still asks George for advice from time to time, which is really cool to know.
Even though George Lucas isn’t directly involved anymore, his impact on Star Wars will always be felt. New writers and creators still draw inspiration from his original work, as author George Nolfi has pointed out.
My process starts by understanding what’s been done previously and the overall vision from Lucasfilm, Disney, and the director, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Then, as a writer, I focus on developing the story’s key moments and characters, always keeping in mind the need to respect the rich history and legacy of the franchise.
