George R.R. Martin, the author of the popular series A Song of Ice and Fire, recently shared news about the upcoming book, The Winds of Winter, and what might happen to Tyrion Lannister. The first book in the series came out in 1999, and the next three followed relatively quickly over the next ten years.
The latest book in the series, A Dance with Dragons, was published in 2011. That means fans have been anticipating The Winds of Winter for fifteen years now.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, George R.R. Martin revealed he’s been advised to make The Winds of Winter, the next installment in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, his main focus, though he doesn’t always feel motivated to work on it.
Look, I’ve got a few things I need to wrap up first, you know? I really want to write more of the Dunk and Egg stories, and I’m itching to get back to the sequel to Fire and Blood. Once those are off my plate, I honestly think I could finally finish The Winds of Winter pretty quickly.
Martin sometimes feels dissatisfied with his writing, even after finishing a chapter. He’ll occasionally reread his work and realize it needs improvement, prompting him to revise it. When he gets stuck on one character’s storyline, like Tyrion’s, he often switches to working on a different character, such as Jon Snow, to keep making progress.
He explained that if left to his own devices, he usually does eventually focus on the task at hand, based on past experience.
I’m not sure what I’ll do today, I think I’ll stay in and work on my ‘Dunk and Egg’ stories. There’s also another ‘Fire and Blood’ book planned. If I could just clear some things off my plate, I believe I could finish ‘The Winds of Winter’ relatively soon. Everyone’s made it clear that’s the most important thing, but honestly, sometimes I just don’t feel like working on it.
I’m a huge Tyrion fan, so it’s a little heartbreaking to hear George R.R. Martin say that things probably won’t end well for him in the books. He basically said Tyrion’s story has been a tragedy from the very beginning, and it looks like that’s going to continue. It’s tough to hear, but knowing Martin, it’ll probably be a really compelling tragedy, even if it’s sad!
The TV series included sad parts of Tyrion’s story, but it ended with him becoming Hand of the King, serving under King Brandon Stark, who the council chose as the new ruler.
When I’m working on a chapter, I often revisit my drafts and immediately think, ‘Wow, this isn’t working at all!’ So I just start rewriting it. Sometimes, if one character’s chapter is stuck, I’ll switch to another – like working on Jon Snow if I’m struggling with Tyrion. But if I can just keep going without distractions, I usually find my way back into the flow and get it done eventually.
Tyrion’s story could end tragically in a number of ways. Given that George R.R. Martin isn’t afraid to kill off important characters in A Song of Ice and Fire, it’s possible Tyrion might die before the series concludes.
Life is often difficult for characters in both the books and the TV show, and many don’t have happy endings, even if they survive. So, even if Tyrion lives, his story might end sadly, rather than with a triumphant position like Hand of the King.
George R.R. Martin revealed he initially planned for more characters to die than actually happened in Game of Thrones. The show’s adaptation changed his mind on some of those decisions. He mentioned Sansa Stark as an example, explaining that because she became so popular on screen, he considered keeping her alive in his book series, A Song of Ice and Fire.
I originally planned for more characters to die, but the deaths in the show [Game of Thrones] felt more conclusive. I don’t think Tyrion will have a good outcome – his story has always been sad. I even considered killing Sansa, but the actress has portrayed her so well that I might spare her.
The television series finally reached the point covered in the books, leaving the creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, to create storylines not found in the original source material.
Martin shared key plot points for the upcoming seasons of The Winters of Winter and the series finale, A Dream of Spring. However, it remains to be seen how closely the show’s creators actually stuck to those plans when writing the last few seasons.
George R.R. Martin appears to prefer juggling multiple projects rather than focusing on finishing one at a time.
He’s not only writing novels, but he’s also a producer on the Game of Thrones spin-offs, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The latter will premiere on HBO January 18th.
Martin recently shared an update about his progress. He’s been encouraged – likely by his publisher or agent – to prioritize finishing The Winds of Winter, but he’s happy working at his current speed. While fans are eager for the next book, Martin wants to make sure the writing is excellent and doesn’t rush the process.
