Gerard Butler’s Geostorm Makes a Comeback on Streaming 9 Years Later

I was surprised to see Geostorm popping up on a streaming service! It’s one of those big, flashy sci-fi action movies from a few years back, and honestly, it didn’t get much love from critics – it’s sitting at just 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were a bit kinder, giving it around 35%, but it still didn’t really take off. It’s got a great cast though, with Ed Harris, Andy Garcia, Jim Sturgess, and Abbie Cornish all involved. It’s fun to revisit sometimes, even if it’s not a masterpiece!

According to FlixPatrol, the movie Geostorm, directed by Dean Devlin, is currently performing well on Tubi, ranking as the fifth most popular movie on the streaming platform as of January 9th. It’s beating out other films like The Bounty Hunter, The Fifth Element, A Knight’s Tale, The Devil’s Advocate, and i, which are ranked sixth through tenth, respectively.

Released in 2017, Geostorm is a movie about a series of extreme weather events that put the Earth in danger. In the film, countries work together to build a satellite system designed to protect people, but the system malfunctions and starts causing disasters instead.

Although critics and audiences didn’t love it, the movie Geostorm still made $221.9 million globally. However, with a production cost of $120 million, it wasn’t financially successful. Gerard Butler plays Jake Lawson, one of the creators of the satellite network featured in the film. Butler is well-known for action roles and will next appear in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, a sequel to the 2018 film.

What’s Coming Up Next for Gerard Butler?

After the second Den of Thieves movie did well, a third film is now in the early stages of development, according to IMDb. Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. are set to return, with Butler again playing Nicholas “Big Nick” O’Brien. Christian Gudegast, who directed the previous two Den of Thieves films and Butler’s 2023 movie Plane, will direct and write the third installment, based on characters created by Paul T. Scheuring.

Gerard Butler is returning to the popular How to Train Your Dragon franchise in the upcoming live-action sequel, directed and written by Dean DeBlois. How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be released in theaters on June 11, 2027, and Butler will reprise his role as Stoick the Vast – a character he previously played and voiced in the animated How to Train Your Dragon films.

Geostorm is streaming for free on Tubi.
