Gerard Butler’s action-packed crime thriller, Den of Thieves, is quickly becoming a hit on free streaming platforms. Butler has become a major action star since his breakout role in Zack Snyder’s 300, going on to appear in films like Law Abiding Citizen, Hunter Killer, and Olympus Has Fallen. Now, viewers are rediscovering Den of Thieves, with some even saying it’s as good as the classic crime film Heat! The movie recently got a sequel, adding to its popularity.
You can currently watch Den of Thieves on Tubi for free. It’s actually the second most popular movie on the platform right now, behind the BET+ original film Call Her King. Released in 2018, Den of Thieves was directed by Christian Gudegast, who also directed the 2025 sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. The movie is a thrilling back-and-forth between a highly skilled team of thieves and the determined deputies of the LA County Sheriff’s office, as the thieves plan a daring heist of the Federal Reserve Bank. Here’s the official description of the film:
Nick O’Brien leads the Regulators, a highly skilled unit within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and is known for his heavy drinking. Ray Merrimen, recently released from prison, heads the Outlaws, a gang of former soldiers who use their training to stay one step ahead of the police. When O’Brien and Merrimen’s groups clash, it’s over an audacious plan to rob the city’s Federal Reserve Bank – a heist that seems almost impossible.
Gerard Butler’s film Den of Thieves has become a popular choice with movie fans, even though critics haven’t loved it – it currently has a 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly, audiences give it a much higher rating of 63%. While it’s definitely not universally praised, those who do enjoy the film are very enthusiastic about it. One Rotten Tomatoes user predicted it could become a classic, while another compared it favorably to Heat, saying it’s even better and noting a tendency to disagree with critics.
‘Den of Thieves’ Is Getting a Trilogy

STX Entertainment
While many fans enjoy Den of Thieves, it isn’t Gerard Butler’s biggest action series. So, it was unexpected when Den of Thieves 2: Pantera came out in 2025. The first movie did okay at the box office, making a little over $80 million, but the sequel earned even less, bringing in over $58 million worldwide.
Look, the Den of Thieves movies aren’t exactly blockbuster titans, but it seems audiences still want more. I’m hearing that Gerard Butler is officially signed on for a third installment, currently titled Den of Thieves 3. We don’t have a release date yet, but it’s good to know the story isn’t finished.
