PlayStation and Sucker Punch Productions are planning another installment in the Ghost of Tsushima series, following both the original 2020 game and the 2025 release, Ghost of Yotei. Before Ghost of Yotei launched, there were concerns about whether it would be as popular as the first game, due to the new main character – which some players weren’t thrilled with – and the fact that fewer people own a PlayStation 5 compared to the PlayStation 4. Sequels can also sometimes be disappointing. However, Ghost of Yotei appears to be performing well.
Sony’s CFO, Lin Tao, told investors that Ghost of Yotei is currently selling better than the original game did at launch. This strong start significantly boosted the company’s recent financial performance. While it’s too early to tell if it will maintain the same level of sales over time – early reviews and player feedback seem a bit less enthusiastic – the game is off to a fantastic beginning.
A Sequel Looks Likely
If Ghost of Yotei cost about as much to make as Ghost of Tsushima, and it sells well, it’s a big win for Sony, likely meaning they’ll make another game in the series. However, even if they do start working on it now, we probably won’t see a third game for several years. Considering five years passed between the first two games, we can expect a similar wait—potentially around 2030. This would likely make it a game for the PlayStation 6, unless there are delays in getting the necessary parts to manufacture the console.
If a third game is made, it will likely feature either a brand new character or continue the story with Jin, the hero from the first game. If they choose to follow Jin’s story, a prequel – a story set before the original – is more probable than a direct sequel. Given the mixed reactions to Atsu, it’s unlikely she’ll be the main character in any future game, whether it’s a sequel or a prequel.
Currently, we can only guess what Sucker Punch Productions has planned for the future of the series, as the studio hasn’t shared any official information. However, future job postings might give us clues about whether they’re planning to create more games like the samurai title.
