With the rising costs of creating large, open world games, Ghost of Yotei appears to be a financially successful project for Sucker Punch.
In a recent interview with GameFile, studio head Brian Fleming revealed the sequel’s development budget is comparable to the original Ghost of Tsushima. Considering the first game cost approximately $60 million to create, the follow-up likely had a similar cost.
Even though it’s a significant amount, Sucker Punch is likely to easily earn back what they invested.

As of September 2024, Ghost of Tsushima has sold approximately 13 million copies, earning Sony around $400 million. While the new game, Yotei, might not reach the same sales numbers, its higher price point suggests it’s on track for similar financial success.
Okay, so the $60 million figure is just the development cost – Sony’s definitely going to pour a *lot* more money into marketing the game, I’m sure. But honestly, as a fan, I don’t think this one game is going to make or break Sony. They’re a huge studio, and this feels like a big swing, not a last-ditch effort.
It’s nice to see a big-budget game from the studio being made with a sensible amount of money.
This proves we can control expenses, and we’re confident the game will ultimately be quite profitable.
