Ghosts Showrunners Got Very Real About The Fact That ‘A Lot Of People Want Jay To Get The Power,’ And Their Take Makes So Much Sense

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been pondering if Utkarsh Ambudkar’s character would eventually gain the ability to see ghosts permanently, much like his wife does. While he has had brief encounters with spirits in the past, it hasn’t been a permanent power yet. So, this question has lingered on for quite some time. Recently, I got insights from the showrunners about whether Jay might develop the ability to communicate directly with characters such as Pete, Trevor, and Hetty. And now, I’m excited to share their perspective!

As the fifth season of the supernatural series “Ghosts” draws near on the 2025 TV lineup, show creators Joe Wiseman and Joe Port shared insights with Entertainment Weekly about what lies ahead. They hinted at Jay’s dangerous pact with the devil, but they also touched upon potential spoilers. This included their thoughts on whether or not Jay can perceive ghosts. Port began discussing this topic by stating:

Many individuals advocate for Jay to obtain the ability to perceive spirits, but we find that notion somewhat sensational, resembling a plot from a television show. It seems unusual that the same extraordinary and peculiar event would befall two residents of the same household.

As an ardent follower of the captivating narrative, I find myself pondering over the impending challenges that Jay, portrayed as Elias, seems destined to encounter, given his binding deal. The tale hints at queries concerning Ambudkar’s character, much like the journey Sam embarked upon. In a hypothetical scenario where he faces near-death and miraculously resurfaces, it would, in principle, grant him a unique perspective – the ability to perceive spirits or ghosts.

Yet, as Port pointed out, it’s rather unusual for Jay and Sam to undergo an identical encounter resulting in the same superpower. This sentiment is shared by Wiseman, who believes granting Jay this ability could diminish some of the show’s enchantment. He elaborated on this idea:

As a cinephile, one aspect that really drew me in was his curiosity towards the spirits and forming connections with them. That was quite an interesting turn for the character – he seems a tad envious of Sam, craving to learn about these spectral beings. Don’t get me wrong, it sounds thrilling, but I can’t help but have reservations that the enchantment of the series might fade slightly with this new twist.

Absolutely on board with your thoughts! From one standpoint, it could be fascinating for Jay to interact with ghosts. However, if we consider it from the viewpoint of a television program, it might lose its charm. The recurring joke in the show is having Jay uncertain about the activities of the spirits and relying on Sam’s explanations. Removing this element could seem odd and disrupt the show’s unique charm.

Furthermore, we’re four complete seasons deep into the show, and as Wiseman noted, Jay has developed distinct relationships with the spirits, despite not being able to see them – his friendship with Pete is a great example. This distinctive character development adds an entertaining twist to Utkarsh Ambudkar’s persona. Consequently, it would be disappointing if this element were removed from the series.

Given the strong arguments presented, it seems unlikely that Jay will encounter ghosts for extended periods beyond an episode. Yet, since Ghosts has been renewed for two additional seasons, there’s always room for surprises over the next two years.

Consequently, don’t forget to catch the next episode of Ghosts as it comes back to CBS on Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time, to see what befalls Jay, Sam, and their companions.
