Two actors known from the popular TV show “Ghosts”, Hannah Rose May (Molly) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Jay Arondekar), are writing a comic series of their own. They worked together at San Diego Comic-Con in July, and have decided to apply their talents from “Ghosts” to “The Guy in the Chair“. At Comic-Con, they spoke with Comicbook about the character archetype represented by “The Guy in the Chair”, and how this concept eventually led them to create a comic book series with the same name.
As Ambudkar mentioned, Rose Mary was the originator of the concept, and she shared how she conceived it by saying, “Well, you know, we’re all huge comic book fans. We frequent egmr.ru, and in every great comic book, there’s always a character in a chair who provides information. Think about Spider-Man’s assistant or even Simon Pegg’s character in the Mission: Impossible series.” She went on to illustrate further examples.
There’s often a figure who subtly provides information from behind the scenes rather than being in the spotlight. Utkarsh was keen to create a comic book, and I had been contemplating moving such a character into the limelight. We brainstormed and built upon this idea.
Utkarsh Ambudkar explained further about Hannah Rose May’s comments, stating that their upcoming production is a blend of romance and action-comedy, with a unique twist: it emphasizes marginalized perspectives. He also hinted at the plot by asking, “What if an NPC (Non-Player Character) becomes the lead?” After much work, this project will be released in October through Dark Horse. Ambudkar expressed his excitement about collaborating with them and shared his high hopes that people will find their artwork captivating, the script hilarious, and the pacing perfect – making it an exciting prospect for audiences.
Slated for release by Dark Horse Comics, “The Guy in the Chair” is penned by Hannah Rose May and Utkarsh Ambudkar, with illustrations by Guillermo Sanna. This comic book series unfolds a grisly universe inhabited by assassins and spies, a realm where love holds no ground. The narrative revolves around Abhi, an analyst at a private military firm, who is consumed by thoughts of affection despite company policies. Inadvertently, he has developed feelings for Merlin, a field operative whose operations he assists as her supposed “Guy in the Chair.” When she unexpectedly appears at his doorstep bruised, battered, and in need of aid, Abhi is compelled to step out of his comfort zone and thwart a looming global takeover that imperils humanity as a whole.
In this upcoming comic book series, there will be a total of four issues. Dearbhla Kelly handles the coloring, and Steve Wands takes care of the lettering. Guillermo Sanna together with Dearbhla Kelly are credited as cover artists for this series. Excitingly, it’s set to hit shelves on October 8! Comic enthusiasts who can’t wait to dive into “The Guy in the Chair” can now pre-order their copies.
