The 2016 revival of Gilmore Girls, titled A Year in the Life, left viewers with a major cliffhanger, and the show’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, has finally addressed the question fans have been debating for nearly ten years. The revival concluded with a quick, surprising conversation between Rory and Lorelai: Rory says, “Mom?” Lorelai replies, “Yeah?” and Rory then reveals, “I’m pregnant.”
The question of who fathered Rory’s child is still a major topic of discussion among fans. Most people assume it’s Logan Huntzberger, her former fiancé and someone she had an affair with. But there’s also the possibility it could be Paul, a less memorable boyfriend, or the mysterious man she spent one night with while he was dressed as a Wookiee. While viewers are left to wonder, the show’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, knows the truth.
Amy Sherman-Palladino Knows Who The Father Of Rory’s Baby Is
Because Gilmore Girls is so closely associated with autumn – Lauren Graham even joked the show “took the season of fall hostage” – many fans start watching it again every fall. This year, the show was even more popular than usual because October 5th marked its 20-year anniversary.
There was a lot of excitement surrounding this anniversary, including the announcement of a new Gilmore Girls documentary called Drink Coffee, Talk Fast. The Hollywood Reporter also spoke with Amy Sherman-Palladino and the Gilmore Girls cast to mark the occasion, and Sherman-Palladino revealed some surprising details about Rory’s pregnancy.
Amy Sherman-Palladino, having stepped away from Gilmore Girls during its last season, explained she’d always intended for the series to conclude with Rory announcing her pregnancy. She said this was because the show’s core theme revolved around patterns from the past and the complex relationship between mothers and daughters.
It’s fascinating to consider how the controversial ending of Gilmore Girls might have played out if Amy Sherman-Palladino had continued as showrunner for season seven. But even more intriguing is her comment about Rory’s baby: she knows who the father is and the baby’s gender.
Fans have long wondered who Rory’s baby’s father is, and Amy Sherman-Palladino isn’t offering any clues. She’s stated the identity will “stay in my mind,” meaning she won’t reveal it. Whether fans believe it’s Logan, Paul, a mysterious ‘Wookiee,’ or even part of a larger storyline involving Paris’s fertility treatments, ASP remains tight-lipped – unless the show gets another season.
Why The Father Question Really Doesn’t Matter In Gilmore Girls’ Story
It’s understandable why some fans are annoyed Amy Sherman-Palladino isn’t revealing the father’s identity, but she has a perfectly good explanation. She recently told The Hollywood Reporter…
I wasn’t so concerned with the boy’s identity, but rather the situation he was in. For me, the most important thing was always to focus on the girls and the relationship between the mother and daughter, because that’s what the show is really about.
As a huge fan of Gilmore Girls, it always struck me how, while romance is definitely a big part of the show, it’s not everything. Sure, it’s fun to debate who Rory should end up with – Team Dean, Jess, or Logan! – and Lorelai and Luke’s relationship is fantastic, but what really makes the show special, for me, is the bond between Lorelai and Rory. It’s their mother-daughter relationship that’s at the core of everything, far more than any of the romantic storylines.
Because the show heavily emphasizes the bond between mothers and daughters, fathers play a smaller role. While Richard Gilmore is a well-developed and interesting character, he doesn’t appear as frequently as Emily, and the central conflict of Gilmore Girls revolves more around the complicated relationship between Emily and Lorelai.
As a huge Gilmore Girls fan, I have to admit, whenever Christopher pops up, I cringe a little. Honestly, one of the biggest issues with season seven was how much focus was given to Lorelai and Chris’s relationship – it really took away from the core of the show, which is Lorelai and Rory’s bond. I feel like bringing up who Rory’s baby’s father is would do the same thing – it would shift the attention away from the relationship that truly matters.
While Amy Sherman-Palladino had a point in keeping the father’s identity a secret, many fans found Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life disappointing for reasons beyond just the cliffhanger about the pregnancy. Despite that mystery, fans still feel like they deserve another continuation of the show.
